EVO Test Drive

OK, this story may be a function of living in a small city but it's absolutely ridiculous. I went to the local Mitusbishi dealership to check out an EVO MR. I'm looking for a car for the wife/future kid and thought I'd at least check out the EVO. Looks hot, quick, AWD for the snow so decent functionality. Maybe not as practical as the other cars I'm looking at but definitely worth considering because we both love to drive.

Anyways, I get to the dealer and there is this lone EVO in the showroom. I tell the sales guy I'm interested in it, I'd like to go for a test drive. Dude says, "this is the only one we have, 0 miles, it stays in the showroom. If you want to test drive it, bring us a thirty-eight thousand dollar check." I'm like WTF, but I guess its some silly policy.

But wait, it gets better. I ask if they have a used one that I can drive, and he says, "you won't find too many of these around. You could try Autotrader but I doubt it." Their logic was that buyers of this car want no mileage on it and that this car is really rare, "believe me it doesn't depreciate." So him and his manager huddle together and tell me that they have a recent client who is a friend who "may be able" to take me for a ride, so I can get the feel of it. I was basically like no thanks, I'm not going for a ride with some stranger and I'm not buying a car without test driving it--sorry if this is unusual for you guys.

I told them I have an M3 and I'll see you bitches later. Actually I didn't say that, they were nice guys just out of touch. They were treating the EVO like a Ferrari or a Gallardo. The sad part is that I might have actually grabbed it, they're kind of growing on me.

There's about four of them here at the local dealership. They've been sitting there for months and I'm sure they have more than 0 miles on them. The Nissan dealership pulled the same stunt on me when the 350Zs first came out. I should've asked the salesman what his purpose was at the dealership then...

Anyhow, I wouldn't let that deter you from looking into the MR. My friend has one and I was impressed! On paper they fair similar times with the NA2. I hate to say this but as good as the NSX seats are (and trust me, they are VERY good) the Recaros in the MR where that much better IMO especially when cornering. One downfall is that there is no cruise control option for the MR, at least not that I know of. Otherwise an excellent choice for a daily.

Small world. I've been wanting to check an EVO MR out too to see if I even fit inside (I'm 6'5"). There are a bunch on ebay at Don Herring in Dallas and a bunch on Autotrader (have to hunt for an MR though). They all seem to be in the low $30Ks so I guess those guys have the solid gold plated, full sticker edition. Hope they enjoy continuing to look at it.

I got my 06 9 MR for $30,600. If you know anyone who works for mitsu this is the friends and family price. Also they let me take the evo out for a day w/o doing any paper work to see if I liked the evo 9 better then the 8 :) After putting over 80,000 miles on evo's in the past 4 years I had 0 problems with them.

Strangely enough, I had a very similar problem with Subaru and the STi. They would let me drive the WRX but not the STi. When I asked about used cars the salesperson said there weren't many around and they never had any at the dealership. Though after some discussion they did finally allow a ride in the STi with the salesperson riding shotgun (I think it was because I'm 39 and not 19).

The Mitsubishi dealer had 4 or 5 new and one used MR. I drove at least 3 of them  , though you can see below which one I chose.

I'm 6'3" and change and was able to fit fine with the front seats reclined. The side bolsters definitely favor a narrow frame. So at 6'5" I think you probably could, check it out. I could NOT fit in the WRX but this was at an auto show and I'd probably give it a 2nd go around if I was really interested.

These guys can keep staring at the EVO all day long as far as I'm concerned. At this point, it's not a wait-list only car or uncommon like an NSX. I'll look into alternative dealerships but I'll have to make a 1-1.5hr trek to find one. I'm still gunning for an S60R as my first choice but the EVO looks like it could do the trick altho I've heard there is excessive cabin noise.

Both my evo's are solid and are as trouble free as the NSX. I had lots of mods meth injection and tracked it over 2,000 miles and 0 check engine lights or problems. The cabin can get a little loud because of the race like tred it comes with from Mitsu, I put some other tred on it and it did quite the car down a bit.

In 03 when it was time to get back into a sport's car, I took a ride to Mitsubishi and Subaru. Both cars were new at that time and they would not let you drive them. The sales guy told me that only the managers were allowed to move them around. He asked me if I wanted to buy a car that has been beaten on or has some miles. I told him I would not buy a $400 Kia without taking it for a test drive. So I bought another NSX. I love both of those cars a lot. A few mods and they flippin fly. However, I am very happy that I did not pick up either of them. At 40, its just not the car I picture myself driving on the weekends. It would make a fun daily driver however.

go to www.evolutionm.net. There are hundreds of them for sale in the classified section.

wow, that sounds prety stupid.
To bad you dont live in SoCal. At south coast mutsubishi they let anyone drive an evo. I almost got one, prety fun car but the interior is a dissapointment

Yeah I just moved from SD...should have tried it out. Back then the EVO bug hadn't infected me yet.
