My 95's power steering went dead. When shutting down the engine, I could hear some kinda 'gas leak' noise on the engine.
Any advice before bringing it to the dealer ? Is it still safe to drive ?
Thank you

did the lite come on?? it happened to mine when i was driving, the lite came on, then the auto transmission D, in green flickered, then the speedo went dead and suddenly came to life again. shut off the engine and restart, the transmission lite went to normal, speedo normal but EPS stayed on and car went without power steering. the dealer is now ordering a new speed sensor and the EPS unit which is on back order from Honda Japan. In the meantime, i am using the car but without EPS. I did not hear any noise from the engine when it happened. take the car to the dealer and let them check the code. my guess is the speed sensor. good luck. BTW, the EPS is very expensive.

Thank you.

So I suppose it is ok to drive with you EPS.

When I shut down the engine, I could hear gas leak noise from the engine for like 2 seconds or so. I told the dearler, and he said that most likely it is pressure problem. My appoitment is schedule on the 13th

Do not let the dealer charge for a new EPS. It is a free replacement from a Honda technical bulletin. Search this site (the FAQ) and you will find it. They will replace the unit for free with no labor charges. If the wheel is being turned when the car (or computer) is starting, it will shut down in failsafe mode, which is no boost. You can drive forever in this mode, it will not hurt the car. There is no "pressure" to speak of, as the assist is an electric motor, not a hydraulic system, so the noise is either something else or not related to the EPS. Good luck.

Do you hear the "gas leak" noise everytime you turn off the car?

If you do then its probably not the EPS, when the NSX shuts off you can hear the air bleed off through the intake duct.

Its especially noticable if you have an aftermarket intake, and even more noticable if you have removed the engine cover.

Mat - I just had the EPS control unit replaced on my 95. It was covered under the service bulletin that extended the warranty for this failure. The problem was the EPS light came on and then no power assist. Safe to drive, just no power steering. As suggested, I used this site and found the info on the service bulletin. Went to the dealer with the problem and said that I knew that this may be under warranty. They have to check it out (there can be other failures that would not be covered). Good news for me is that it was the control module. You can also download the service manual pages for the power steering and it gives you the error codes that the dealer looks for. That way you can ask him to show you the code if he says it is not covered. Show up informed and they always treat you better.

how long did it take the dealer to replace the EPS control unit? just wondering if I need to leave it overnight or I could wait for it.they are telling me half a day...

FYI I have a 96 and the EPS hasn't failed yet but the dealer is going to replace it anyways..

Its a quick fix... half hour tops.

Basically how long does it take to disassemble the glovey, unplug the old, plug the new, assemble the glovey?
