This morning on the way to work the car starting stalling and would barely move when I gave it gas in first gear. I placed it in nuetral and floored it, and it did rev up fine. That lasted for a short period, it kept stalling and after awhile giving it gas did nothing but make it cough and not move. I was able to manage to get it into the work parking lot and it died. Now it cranks but will not start. I was thinking it could be the main relay but since it died in transition I am not sure. Has anyone had this problem before and any ideas on what it could be. My guess would be fuel pump or main relay.

P.S. The check engine light and the TCS both came on while the engine was on an stalling

Thanks

prolly the main relay.

Give the area below the rear window just to the inside of the passenger (LHD) seat a whack...the car should rumble back to life.

but yes, the MR does fail during regular driving.

Sounds to me like the main relay. Id take it out and inspect it. Im not sure about the whole stalling out thing, but my car wouldnt start, kept clicking but wouldnt turn over. I immediately changed out the main relay after inspecting everything else and it fired up perfectly. Sometimes you can just inspect the relay and fix the pins in it, otherwise order a new one.

how many miles do you have on it? i think it might be an internal problem, that sounds like something that happened to me and i had to get it rebuilt. does it start anymore ? can you drive it at all?

I was lucky enough to have it stop right in from of Mark Basch's shop. He is taking a look at it. I tried banging on the relay but it didnt work. Lets see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

It was the main relay. Not sure why, but banging on it did not work. I read about that issue on this forum many times in the past. Many have suggested to keep a spare one in the car just incase, I guess I should have listened! In any case there are none available in Phoenix so he is having one over nighted. Thanks for the help!

Mark said the relay was bad so he ordered a new one. That is what I initially thought it was so I left it for him to take care of...he said it was something like $80. I would have ordered and fixed it myself but was stranded, luckily right in fornt of his shop. Didnt have a chance to take a look at the part.

Has the main relay replacement fixed the problem? I am also in Phoenix and started having the No start problem awhile back where I would turn the key and get nothing. Then one day I had your problem where the starter turned over but the car would not remain running or would stall. That happened just once and then no problems at all until last couple of days. Now the starter turns over but it won't start up until I make a whole lot of attempts. Now sometimes it will start right up with no engine light issue and sometimes the starter will turn over just fine but the car won't start--like it has no gas.

It was the fuel pump in the end, some how it got shorted and it used the main relay as a fuse. My car would turn over but just would not start. Im not sure what your issue is but you can give Mark a call at Basch Accurate Service, he may be able to give you some ideas on the phone. Tell him Ajay told you to call.

Mark does all my work also--he last had to replace the head gaskets. I think my current problem is the main relay as I took off the rear top panel and wacked the main relay and the engine started after that.
