Looser hotter running engines normally use thicker oil and cooler tighter engines run thinner oil. 5W40 sounds like reasonable substitute for the recommended 10W30 and should not be a problem and should not make a negligible difference in the engine performance. Issues come up when people get carried away and go to something like straight 50 weight.
