I've been racing go-karts at a local indoor track (Andretti Speed Lab), and decided to try the next step up - outdoor endurance karting. I went to a Johan Schwartz Endurance Karting event in Charlotte, held at the kart track in the infield of Lowes Motor Speedway. The karts have centrifical clutches and go about 30 to 35 mph.
It was excellent. Very professionally run event, much much more fun than indoor karting. If you really want to have a serious blast, try it out. It's not cheap, but they supply the karts and everything else if you want to rent it and don't have it (helmet, suit, etc). I highly recommend these guys: http://www.endurancekarting.com. They put on events throughout the east.
Andretti Speed Lab karters did very well - took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in the topmost class (GT Pro) in the 8 hour race. My 3 member team took 2nd in our class and 8th overall in a 1.5 hour race. Don and Chris, you shoulda done it!
Pics below. That's me with the white armbands, the other 2 guys also race at Andretti.
Here's a link to a video (3.5 megs) that shows how they have you do the driver changes during the race.
