Can someone tell me how emmissions testing is done in CA? I am specifically asking to see if they check for cats phyisicaly. Is there a "sniffer" that goes in the pipe? here in MA its only a plug into the OBDII port and as long as there are no engine codes, you pass (on newer cars that is). Thanks for help guys. I am specifically asking how it would be in the bay area.

The visual depends on the vigilance of the tech, since the computer can't enforce the inspection. I've been going to the same guy for years. He always checks the things under the hood, like EGR & timing, but I've never seen him look for the cats. Haven't yet had to take the NSX to him though.

depends on the tech

i know a guy i work with, he'll do catless smogs. as long as it pass the sniffer test and can pass the actural smog test. he does not check ignition timing or egr.

really relaxed guy acturally. its also a smog only station. there are lots of smog stations willing to run your car for a little extra on the side.

or what u can do is bring another stock nsx and scan the vin code and registration code off your car and put the other one on the dyno.

do this at your own risk.

good luck.

Like John mentioned. That is the regular method and there is also the other method, the method Supra and FD owners usually use:wink:

There is nothing stopping you from passing using the regular method other than not having cats. Even without cats, there are also places that will let you pass regardless whatever mod you got.

Are you planning on relocating to Bay Area?

I've never had a smog tech look for the cats. They do test it with a sniffer. I just figured that you had to have working Cats to pass the sniffer.

Depends on where you go. My regular shop, since they knew me, didn't do the physical inspection; just the sniffer. Once I had to go to a different shop (test only) for my GS-R; they saw the car and immediately went looking for cats.
