I bought a new knob for the e-brake because the chrome on the old one was flaking off. I could barely get the old one off using pliers. I tried just screwing on the new one with my hand becuase I didn't want to scratch it but could only turn it a couple of times so it's barely on. What am I doing worng with this? Any tips? Thanks!

Use a small strap wrench.

I had the same problem. I used a rubber band and wrapped it around the chrome to get a better grip with my fingers.

I tried the rubber band trick and it's still too tight. Maybe I'll give the strap wrench a try next. Is that how they would do it at the dealership/factory?
