Electric power Steering on a 93 nsx?

I think there are posts that describe that this could be done, and there is even a post by someone who did do it. You might want to try to search for it.

Having said that, there's something endearing about the lack of power steering. It feel more visceral and true to its roots...

It took me a while to get used to it, now I can't stand driving cars with power steering!

is it possible to attach a power steering unit from a 97+ car to a 93? any comments would be appreciated thanks

i did a conversion on my landcruiser. i imagine the principle is similar. realistically, all you need is The pump, the box, and the lines.... the lines are easy, any line shop can make them. mine cost me $37. the pump should be easy, since later cars used PS...what you need is the bracket, which you need to either custom make or use from another junked NSX or get from acura.... the box, i would imagine, is a direct bolt-on..course i am assuming this, not stating it as fact. PS conversion is very easy in theory, just needs a lot of elbow grease.

the short version: If your block is pre-drilled for the PS bracket, your life is easy. If not, it's up to you to decide if you want to drill the block, or custom fab a bracket for the PS pump.

 That makes no sense here. The powersteering on the NSX is an electric motor. Why would he have to drill the block?

that's what I thought the PS of the nsx is an electric unit and I don't think it requires a pump. just a 12V source? no? thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll fone Bernie and Davis acura and see what he says. I don't really need the PS but I hear some owners say that it's really much better drivability if it is equipped with it.

Do a search. It is not easy, nor is it cheap. I think there are 5 or 6 different components that have to be changed, and the whole wiring harness is one of them! Much cheaper in the long run to trade up to a 95+ model I would think.

Volume 9 of the "VTEC Sports" Magazine, the same folks who publish the Hyper Rev Magazine has an article about retrofitting the power steering system to a non power steered car.

The particular car in question is a NA1 version of the NSX (manual) to which a power steering system of an automatic is retrofitted.

From what the article states there are several components that need to be swapped or added on. Fortunately all NSX's even the manual ones have the right hooks to have a Power Steering system retrofitted.

The cost that has been quoted in the article is about: 520,000 yen or about $4,000, that's not really that cheap :(.

They don't really quote part numbers but they do quote the name of the parts.

To bad you are in NYC. I have an 02 with EPS and I do not want it. You have a 93 with manual rack and I want that.
Want to trade???????

AJKS- Why don't you just disconnect the EPS?

You can just disconnest the EPS, but you will still have the weight of the EPS system (est 25-30 pounds) and you will still have the drag of the motor. So its not the same thing. I am very sensitive about my weight :D

This should tell you something about the upgrade! I owned a '91 and now own a '00 with power steering and I would say that the feel on the non power unit is far superior. I have also considered taking it off to save the weight and get the feeling of my previous NSX's perfect steering feel.

In my opinion if you change it over you will be wasting money and time and end up with a car that is less valuable then it is now.

Good Luck with whatever you decide though.

Do you mean the 93 NSX would loose value from having an EPS?

Good Luck with whatever you decide though. [/B]

Yes I would believe a '93 with power steering would be worth less than one with stock steering.

I would consider this a modification that most people wouldn't want on an earlier NSX, based on the extra weight increased complexity and such.

I also believe that removing the power steering from a newer car would also hurt the resale value.

Maybe it is just me but I wouldn't want to buy a used car that has had something as important as the steering changed.

I might do it to my car, but I would change it back before selling.
