Last month I dropped my laptop. There is no apparent damage but now the screen is black. If I shine a bright light on the screen I can see that the laptop is working fine beside the fact there is no light coming from the screen. Any ideas what may be wrong or if I can fix it?

Your backlight lamp probably went out. The part should be around $35. If you’re comfortable opening up your notebook computer, you could replace it yourself. Otherwise, it should not take to long for a computer shop to replace it for you.
If it's not the lamp, it could be the inverter; however, my guess would be the lamp since it's more fragile.

I would start by contacting the manufacturer or checking their site. Lamps do go out, so the manufacturer should sell them. You might be able to find one for you model on eBay (start by searching for "backlight lamp"). I ran across this this page. I have no experience with that company, but it looks like they would carry what you’re looking for.

The flourescent lamp in most LCDs are a bitch to get to. I dont know if most places will even offer that service...they will probably try to stick you with a new entire LCD.

depending on use needs, you could also just attach an external monitor to it... if you're on the road, that may not be much of an option.
Does it have the 14 or 15 inch LCD?
If you are willing to take the front plastic trim off of the screen area and snap some pics of the flourescent lamp connector Ill send you a free lamp. You would have to install it yourself or maybe find someone brave enough to do it for you. Its not hard but some LCDs are just a pain to get apart.

If you didn't want to tackle the replacement yourself there are places like http://www.lcdrepair.net/ that offer backlight repair services...
