Driveshaft and CV Joints

The rear end of my car swung out too far on a left hand turn, hitting the curb. The impact bent the wheel and the lower control arm too. The right rear wheel looks like it’s set at 20-degrees of positive camber. It turned out to be a good excuse to buy some Racing Hart wheels. Of course, I also replaced the upper and lower control arms, knuckle, tie rod inner and outer, and the end links. Just to be safe (I told myself) I replaced a few other OEM parts. I added Bilsteins and Eibachs, Dali sway bars, and Brembo big brakes.

After a test drive, I noticed vibration that starts at about 40MPH and gets worse at higher speeds. It is not RPM or gear related. I took the rear apart again and with the car up on stands, I put it in gear. I can see that the right rear driveshaft is slightly bent, causing the vibration at speed.

My question is: Can I replace just the driveshaft, or is it always better to replace the entire $1,000 assembly (drive shaft and inner and outer CV joints). I noticed in the parts book that although the CV joints and internal parts have part numbers, the driveshaft doesn’t, leading me to believe that it’s all intended to be replaced as an assembly. Thanks for your comments.

Sorry to hear about your troubles - seems like a heck of a price to pay for hitting a curb!

:(

Anyway - I think most people would tell you to replace the drive shaft and inner and outer CV joints. Since you seem to be VERY handy with a wrench and have it in the air for testing - I would think you might start with the drive shaft and then if you still notice the vibration - pick up the CV joints. It is really up to you and how much you depend on the car and value your time (or feel lucky!).

Also - have you considered / tried any of the recylers? Might be another way to save some $$$ off of new.

Good luck to you.
