When I open the driver's door, there's a small popping sound. I can't see anything on the body or in the door hinge that seems to be binding or otherwise causing a problem. Anyone ever have this issue?

I'm not sure if this is it, but one time the dealer didn't adjust my window correctly and when the window was up it would ever so slightly hit the little half-circle black clip located on the windshiled pillar (sorry for the run-on snetence).

I've had my 91 for 1.5 yrs now, picked it up with 21k miles on it.
I started having the same issue last winter only during cold and wet spells in the weather
The creak seemed to be coming from the area around the "detent rod".
Everytime I opened and closed the door.
Annoying as all #&!!.
I greased all the area around the "detent rod" and where it recessed into the door, but the creak persisted. Using a small hammer and flat punch I carefully removed the pin that holds the “detent rod” to the the pillar. I applied grease liberally to the pin and the rod (again)then reassembled them. I swung the door a few times in an attempt to work the grease in then I wiped off the excess grease.
The creak persisted for another day or so…. then mysteriously went away as mysteriously as it appeared. It hasn't returned since even during this years cold and wet weather.
Don’t know what I did to fix it but I’m not complaining anymore.
If this is a common problem (as it seems), I am kind of surprised that nobody has found out the actual cause of the problem. It drives me up the wall!! :frown:
check what acura calls the door checker or where it fastens to the body. I have seen problems with them on honda's. The door checker is cheap. The the peice it attatches to on the body in the door opening is welded in and a pain to do anything with.
I have a 91 and have only had it for 3 months and the drivers side door creaks really loud everytime it is opened!! it is sooo anoying and a little embarrasing when there are people around (
Just a quick note on the door problem everyone is asking about. I bought a 1991 NSX about a month ago and dicovered the same problem with my driver's door. After some careful investigating and lady luck I found and fixed the problem.(in under 10 minutes) Here's the fix. The sound is coming from the split hollow pin where the arm from the door stop anchors below the window pillar. Simply remove the pin and hold it in a vice end to end with the split facing upwards. Take a flat screw driver and with a hammer spread the pin open. This will tighten the fit and take up any excess clearance thus curing the problem.
I regularly lubricate the door hinges, the flat rod as well as the latch area with aerosol white lithium grease and have never had any sound issues. My "lubefest" also includes trunk and hood hinges as well as the hood latch mechanism.
The pin location is midway between the upper and lower door hinge behind the front fender. It is removed by tapping the bottom of the pin and driving it upwards. The misconception is that the sound comes from the detents within the door itself, but the sound is actually at the front of the detent arm and is caused by the loose pin. Just be sure to have someone holding your door so when the pin is removed it doesn't swing past the full open position and hit the front fender.

I used a flat punch to slide the pin up partially, apllied bearing grease and reset the pin. Seems it took a day or so for the grease to work itself in. The creaking hasn't returned since.
That is the pin. Just drive it up through the hinge, remove it and spread it apart.(it is a split pin) When you reinstall the pin it will take up any excess clearance and solve the problem
