He hits the panel flat with the shovel head. If he hit the panel in the seam with the edge of the shovel the outcome would surely differ. That said, the panel would also surely stop a door ding and that would be worth it to me. Good idea if you have a spouse or child that is careless with her car door and parks next to you.
