I just donated some Euros (an amount that really hurts me and exceeds my donation to the christmas NSX Prime "bikes for kids" program by far) to the german Organisation Deutschland hilft that is just hugely involved in the helping actions for Southern Asia.

As I know this community here I'm sure I'm not the only Prime member that wants to help. You may add yourself in this thread if you helped too to give others a good example - we are one world and some of us need it.

I'm going to the local Red Cross today to drop off some Ben Franklins.

We donated through the Red Cross. This is a very important cause and a lot of less fortunate people need our help. You can donate directly through amazon.com. They're up over US$4M in donations already!

In the US, the American Red Cross donation page is at: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

In Canada, the page is at: http://www.chsredcross.org/article.asp?id=000043&tid=016

I noticed that apple.com's main page has a list of the major disaster relief funds with direct links to their websites for online donations. It's very encouraging to see all of these corporations doing whatever they can to help this cause.

Donated 2 days ago to the Red Cross/Red Crescent. It's so sad to see the number of dead. Makes you think doesn't it. Give a hug to your loved ones everything can change in the twinkling of an eye. Lyle :frown:

I have to second Savethechildren.org. I looked them up, their financials are posted on the Site. 90% of their donations/grants went to programs. That is very impressive for a "non profit orginization"

I am going through the Red Cross here in Switzerland for my donation: please realize that even a small amount can really help a lot, they need everything down there (from water to medicine)!

I am sure that we lucky owners of NSX can find some spare dollars to donate for such an important issue!

So far I've donated to Doctors Without Borders and CARE and I'm looking to spread a little more around if I can find good organizations that will use it wisely. Not to discourage others, but I can't bring myself to donate cash the Red Cross. Too many stories about them in the past, supported by their actions after 9/11/01. My concerns may be unfounded, but my money will (hopefully) still go where it's needed and I'll feel better about it. Although at the moment I think cash is not what is in short supply, I’m hoping that an abundance of it will somehow help and encourage charities to do more and stay longer.

If anyone knows of any especially good charities helping in Asia others than those already mentioned, please post them.

Hi

I donated to a lady from Sri Lanka that sat at the local grocery store. She was collection money for the local Red Cross that will donate the money to help people in Sri Lanka.

I think it was the swedish Prime minister that said that we all know somebody that are directly involved in the tragedy or know somebody that know. We have several local people affected and it was sad to see the lady at the grocery store. Read about her in the local paper about her family back in Sri Lanka.

Regards

SJS, I had the same concerns you have with Red Cross after 9/11 but did eventually contribute to them.

Given the media scrutiny that will ensue after this disaster also, and the specific designation of where the funds can be used (I specified exclusively for Tsunami Relief) the only issue for me was the administrative overhead costs. And at this point, my guess is there will be a lot of pressure on the larger organizations to curtail padding their costs whereas the smaller organizations can't absorb nor have the reserves to cover part of such costs on their own - and they often come with some subtle agenda of their own.

I also had fear about if my money will eventually reach the needed. I feel that Red Cross is probably still the safest, so my money went there.

I do not trust the Red Cross because it is a Swiss organization or because it was founded not too far from my house, but I do because I know people working there for almost no money. People that spent long time in Kosovo, Somalia and other not-very-funny-places just to help people out whose only guilt was to be born in a very unlucky place.

Anyway, whatever you choose, as long as you donate, it is a good thing! :)

BTW, it is 4:15am here, so HAPPY NEW YEAR, time to go to bed for me! ;)

Unfortunately those honest, dedicated and sincere people are not the ones who run the show. I'm not by any means condemning the Red Cross and I'm sure they will do a lot of good with the tens of millions of dollars already donated for this disaster, but I'd prefer to give my money to some of the other organizations so they have the resources to help as well.
