Does my seat cushion make me faster?

I've been driving around with the Dali cushion for a week, and when I went back to the stock cushion I felt like I climbed into an SUV. I sit at least a solid 2" lower in the car with the Dali... which made me think... I am lowering 200 pounds 2" in the car. Do it with the passenger seat and you are lowering 400 pounds by 2+ inches. Should that not help the handling is some small way? Is that crazy to think there may be a difference a pro could notice? Never thought a cloth seat cushion could make you faster... lol... It is a bit lighter too!

Well, think about it. You mentioned you were 200 pounds and being a hair over 5 feet tall, you should know that your stockiness keeps you more stable when running around. Although I am an Adonis under 200 pounds, my superior height leads to my demise in football when someone might hit me along my mid-section. Your belt line is so low that it's nearly impossible to hit and even if anyone wanted to scrape on the ground their nose hitting your belt line, they'd most likely bounce off and you would just be given a slight misdirection.

So in short, your lower seat cushion does aid in you getting lower lap times. But the periscope adds weight and is a bit unwieldy.

There's no way that cushion drops you 2". I think about 1" of extra headroom is all you get. I'm looking for the ultimo skinny cushion which will give another 1"+ of drop (I need it for the headroom, not for my laptimes ). I may have to get it custom made.

back in the days of JTCC, the honda accord "class II" car had the steering wheels extended, you will see the driver helmet showing in the rear window and most of the time you only see half of it cuz they are sitting so low. For weight distribution purpose, I'm sure in pro racing, every ounce counts. But then for Amateur level, to get more comfortable and being able to see is important too.

I personally doesn't like to sit too low to the point of hamper my view. (years of owning honda, got spoiled)

I guessed when you sit low, it may force you to look farther which could be a by product for some people to get better lap times.

I'm getting 2" more distance from head to headliner. I did it with a tape measure, although it was not perfect trying to do it myself. It's more than an inch. I also measured my wanker while I was at it, and it was 10.24".

LOL.... Bradley aren't you in the wrong section of this forum? Go back to electronics and multimedia where you belong.

plus when you're driving without the bottom cushion your legs are straight and it just feels great :) like a gokart.

Way to prove my point that there is absolutely no way you gained 2" of headroom.

From a theory perspective, lowering the center of gravity of the driver in a chassis would be a handling improvement. You are re-orienting a 200 lb object which is significant. It is typical in GT cars to re-position the seat, steering column, pedal box, and controls farther back along the wheelbase for example. Move things like the power-train lower in the chassis. Move things around for more ideal weight distribution, etc... enough little things can cumulatively can make a measurable difference in total.

That said, the reality check- you are contemplating hundredths/thousandths, certainly not a tenth of a second here. Another-wards, a degree of chassis improvement I can guarantee is completely in-consequential for whatever you are doing in HPDE traffic. While I haven't seen your time spread nor driven with you- I highly, highly, doubt you are consistent enough of a driver at this point in your early driving career whereas you would notice subtle car changes, let alone something of this caliber. Nor does your current level of preparation/application of your vehicle nearly warrant such inconsequential modifications / infinitesimal engineering improvements.

My 0.02 - If it gives you the head clearance you need to see, then great it could be worth 20 seconds a lap. However, as to using it for a lower CG... if the lucky cushion or just knowing that MJ has touched your butt makes you feel more confident and push the pedal down more, then I think that's what you should do.

Sure it makes you faster for 2 reasons.

1. Theorectically - you are lowering the center of gravity. This is prolly not that important in a DE car.

2. You are more comfortable, are looking farther ahead, and are driving with more confidence. That is more likely the reason why you will be faster.

I trained that seat cushion to be crazy fast in all situations.

It its not you, its the cushion!

Glad to see youre using it!

Yeah once I got all the yellowish stains out of it, it turned out to be fine.
