I have performed a sniff test on a good number of cars, including 2 that were brand new. I have yet to find a car that doesn't leak. Probably very tiny amounts for a well-sealed system though, on the order of grams per year.
Possibly loss of mineral oil in the compressor, the result of a leak in the sealed system,at least in my case thats what happened when my compressor was noisy. Or maybey just a dry clutch bearing on the compressor.
Got Freon top up at a shop today. My A/C compressor noise is now gone. I asked the mechanic where the gas could escape. He said one possibility is from the o-rings that have aged.

Auto a/c systems have numerous mechanical connections on both t he high and low pressure sides(As opposed to welded connections), odds are that thru regular wear and tear a small leak will develop, if the leak is not repaired or is large enough you can also loose refrigerant oil which will cause compressor failure.

Interesting. The compressor shuts off by a switch if freon is too low. I never thought of the compressor getting loud as soon as freon is low. I always had no cold air at all when freon was too low.
We have a lot of leaking NSX's (91) here, some more, some less.
