For a very long time I have said that WRC drivers are the most skilled, and most insane, drivers out there. Yes, F1 is a high skill level, but F1 does not have PEOPLE ON THE TRACK to avoid, or high speed speeping turns through the woods that are barely as wide as the car. I have the utmost respect for rally drivers and their artful craft.
Rallying is WAY more exciting that F1. The spectators can get right next to the drivers (and the drivers can get right next to the spectators sometimes!)
But don’t forget, the real person driving the car is the co-driver. If he says “flat out over crest” or “90 degree left with cliff after crest” who is the driver to question him? You wouldn’t believe how cool/hair-raising it is to follow the co-driver’s command when the road is blind!
You develop a kind of language. And sometimes the co-driver gets aggressive and wants you to go faster and will modify the way he/she says the notes. Once when I was really going fast and sweating and everything, my co-driver asked me calmly “hey, got a magazine or something to read in here?”! Rallies are a laugh.
On the other hand, 99% of all the crashes are the drivers fault, not doing what the co-driver said.
Rallying (pace note rallying) is very cool to do. (don’t bother I if you are not allowed to make and use pace notes, though. Its way too unsafe without pace notes, and the co-driver has nothing to do except pick his nose anyway).
If you ever get the chance to do clubmans/amateur pace-note rallying then do it no matter what your budget or car is. You will love it.
Pace note rallying generally possible in all countries except English influenced countries, so I believe there are no pace note rallies for small clubmans/amateur rallies in England, USA, Canada, Australia etc), but in all the rest of the world and European countries, we are allowed to use pace notes and THAT really makes it great.
I love rallying.
