I did just a month of expenses. We adopted a new expense system/procedure that is a nightmare.

I have to get specific cost IDs for the system, and half of them don't work or have blocking issues that prevent data entry.

After I get past that, I enter the expenses online, print out the forms. I have to submit a separate excel spreadsheet with the exact same info, along with copies of the receipts to our operations office. Then I have to mail in the paper expense report, along with the originals, to the accounting office.

The Operations office approves my expenses (from the Excel spreadsheets/receipt copies), and then the accounting office approves my expenses (from the online/paper report and original receipts).

All of this takes many many hours of time to compile, enter, and send information electronically and manually.

I spent over 20 hours to do a month's worth of expenses.

If this doesn't improve soon, I'm so out of here...

This is a major reason I've been in such a bad mood lately. It just pisses off that productive time is wasted doing crap like this.

Not only does impact my time, but all the employees who report to me. I have hold their hands through this process, so it's magnified for me.

I know what you mean. Our company has been on a "paperless" system for the past 4 or 5 years. It's interesting that we use more paper now than ever before.

You get the best out of others when you give the best of yourself.

boy, have you hit a sensitive note with me.

24 yrs ago when i was a fairly junior salesman being offered a job by a new employer, the hiring manager said, "so, what do you really HATE about selling?". i said, "i HATE doing expenses - i HATE IT". he said, "great, i'll give you $250 a month expense account and you don't have to turn in anything".

easily one of the happiest days of my life.

then about 6 yrs ago when i was a vp of a privately held software company, the co-owner came to me and said, "look, the controller has asked you for your expenses for the past 3 yrs, could you just give her the bags of receipts and her staff will take care of them; otherwise, you're out the money."

again, another happy day.

the end of last september i left a european software company to take some time off and play. i hadn't done expenses in, oh... a long time. 4 months after i left the company the controller emailed me and said, "if you could just send us the bags of receipts, we'll do the paperwork.".

another good day.

early this year i began helping tiny euro software company and... you guess what happened with the expenses. i've been gone for 2 months and actually turned in the spreadsheet but havent submitted an invoice to them for payment (i was consulting for them).

oh, and the company i departed last sept - next week i've got to turn in my travel comp time paperwork.

ack.

YES, I ***HATE*** EXPENSE PAPERWORK!!!!!!!

Hey you should get a new job...the guy that sits on the corner outside my shop made 70k last year with his cardboard sign....no other paperwork involved

Unfortunately this is the corporate world for you. I felt the same way....and tried to change a system that doesn't want to be change. After a year of trying, I called it quit. Some of us feel that we made alot of money for the company with no appreciate......this paper works reflects it. Damn I feel I can go on for ever.. anywho, see if you can call a meeting and put in chime in how you can improve it before deciding "out a here" :D

The paperless office is about as attainable as a paperless toilet. :D

What i hate is a new IT-based system being put in place to reduce 'manual labour' (paperwork) but it takes 5 times longer to perform a task. Slowing things down defeats the purpose of IT.

StevenY : That's a Chinese Proverb "A man who write's another's fortune eats his own" :D

I hate paperwork so much I pay someone else to do it for me.

Between this patriot act shit and all other fraud, the SEC and the g-ment are just cracking down on financial professionals. It really pains me to see that the crooked few are ruining it for the rest of us.

Everytime I turn around, a client has to sign yet another disclosure. You have no idea how many people purchase products through me ( mainly annuities my gawd) and get cold feet because the paperwork and all its legal mumbo jumbo. I lost a 200K contract just last month. Anyway thats another rant in itself.

I feel ya man. Paperwork is a bloody pain in the ass.

I'll trade you one day worth of my insurance paperwork for your paperwork any day of the week.

Now I can stand the insurance paperwork. I usually sell through MassMutual if the client is in good health. They've got some cheap term for a larger company and their permanent product is pretty good, too. Thankfully they have streamlined the process where all apps can be filled out online and the parameds contact them automatically. Insurance paperwork has been the least of my worries.

Well when I have to fight for money owed to me for six months, the paperwork is insane.

I'm on the other end of the paper trail; I provide the treatment. Then, some jacka$$ at the insurance company determines if my treatment and fee are justified. The amount of time and money wasted on my side is unbelievable.
