Do HID's make car go faster?

Just put on the SOS HID system and was giving it a try, when they lit up the word "TURBO" on a beautiful blue 2002 Porsche that was in front of me stopped at a red light. The illumination that these lights generate are great by the way. As the Porsche is in front of me, and I see him looking in his rear view mirror, he jumps the light and we're off. By the time we hit triple digits, I can't see the "TURBO" emblem anymore. You can guess where it was.

This is not a "kill story," as I can assure you that we are both alive and well.

It turns out this guy owns a 360 Modena, S2000, and the Porsche Turbo, and spends a bit of time on the race track. He said he knows quite a few NSX owners, and that the NSX was a great track car... better than his Porsche. Great guy this B.M. We exchanged business cards and he was off.

All I can say is that I was pleasantly surprised with these HID lights. Oh yeah, and a special thanks to Mark Basch and his BBSC.

I got a theory on this one. The HID headlights you bought from MARC BASCH is actually a tractor beam device from the 24th century that actully -locks on- to the Porsche 911 TURBO in front of you and sling-shoted YOUR NSX ahead of the hopped up VW Beetle in a matter of nanoseconds as soon as you hit triple digits, in an unsuspected way. I suspect that Mark, the guy who sold you the so-called SOS HID lights, is actually Commander Data in disguise....

Like I said, just a Theory.....

What year is your NSX?

I thought a SC NSX could keep up with a turbo Porsche.

How far ahead was he?

For some reason, I got the idea that the NSX was ahead

I have a '91 NSX/43K mi., BBSC, headers, & exhaust. Just put the new BBSC program in Monday...oh yeah! and those SOS HID's about an hour before!

This is not a "Kill Story".......but at the light he was the car in front of me, when it turned green, he got 2-car lengths by 30 mph, by 100+ we were side by side...and I was gaining more ground. By that time he let up on the gas as did I. This guy was a true sportsman, and not one of those euro-nazi-fly-by types. We pulled over at a gas station and spoke for 10-15 min,(it was close to midnight).

I was very impressed with my car, and this guy apparently was no slouch of a driver, like me.

Thanks again to MB for the BBSC, or was it the HID's.

Just thought I'd share.

Good call... I consider this a "spirited encounter of the BBSC kind"

I know this board dislikes kill stories, but I certainly do enjoy reading about encounters among enthusiasts piloting different marques...

I always thought Mark looked more like the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager rather than Data :-)

Maybe he just needs to install holo-emmitters in on each coast so he can travel more efficiently!

Yes, I have been to a Star Trek Convention, and No, I didn't dress up for it :-)

That sounds like Brad and unless he has sold it in the last few months he also ownes a Zenardi NSX. Nice Guy.

Of course, I have no idea who these drivers really were, but this is what I was told

It was fun, and the SC NSX was FAST. The two drivers matched up twice, once when the Porsche Driver didn't recognize the car behind him (and therefore didn't really push it until the other car started pulling on him) and the second time into a left turn and then a straight, at which point the Porsche driver let the NSX driver get into his powerband (much quicker to get into it in the 911, so he backed off for a moment) and then they were off. The NSX did very well... faily neck and next until they headed into a corner with limited visibility, at which point they wisely backed off.

This 911/NSX-Z/S2000/360 owner has also tested the 911 in a straight line against another NSX with the same supercharger and pulled ahead, so they're still not quite as fast, but they are SWEET. He is very tempted to put one on his Zanardi (which is #18, btw).

Z18, very nicely done. Other owners might have become defensive when telling their side of the story and turned this into an ugly thread. I liked the way you described your own encounter.

BTW, I applaud your fine taste in cars.

Um.. not trying to be a Trekkie or anything, but he was just kidding. 1701 is the number on the Enterprise starship. It's funny to see you guys trying to analyze it though.

Btw, I'd be happy to answer any questions about various sports cars/exotics I've driven, both on the track and on the road. I've driven quite a few, and while I certainly do not claim to be a great driver, or even a really good one, I am and have been since I saw Magnum PI at 8 years old, obsessed with sports cars and have made every effort to own or at least drive every one I can
smile.gif
To that end, I by NO means mean to be bragging by this list; rather, I'd just be happy to share my experience with other enthusiasts and answer any queries I can.

Also, and perhaps appropriate in that this is an NSX board, I'd place the Zanardi NSX as my third all time favorite (not counting the 360 Challenge, as it is not street legal). And, put wider tires on it (yes, NSXtacy
smile.gif
), and give it 400+ hp and it would move up to rank #2.

Cars Driven Subjective Rank (all cars are stock)
Ferrari 360 Challenge 0
Ferrari F40 (euro) 1
Ferrari 360F1 Modena 2
Acura NSX Zanardi 3
Porsche 996TT 4
Ferrari 550 Maranello 5
Corvette Z06 (375hp) 6
Dodge Viper GTS 7
Mazda RX-7 TT 8
Honda S2000 9
BMW M3 (E46 SMG) 10
Acura NSX-T '00 11
Lamborghini Diablo VT 12
Ferrari 355 Spider 13
Acura NSX '91 14
Corvette C5 15
Ferrari Testarossa 16
Acura Integra Type R 17

note: the subjective rank is just that: my personal taste. Factors for me include appearance, handling (cornering ability, grip), horsepower (0-60 as well as, say, 60-120), my preference for sports cars over GT cars, etc. One thing that I'm not factoring, btw, is cost.

Tracks Driven

Here's Mark Basch working on his laptop tuning the ECU data for the BBSC...
