All of those little subcompartments are helmholtz resonator cavities, tuned such that the low frequncy rumble is eliminated. My humble opinion is that yes, it can be modified to be more free-flowing, but I wouldn't do it for the following reasons:
1) It will be very boomy and drone at particular low engine speeds.
2) Bypassing the cavities won't really help much with performance since it is already pretty free-flowing.
3) After the time spent modifying this, you'll have a boomy, louder system that doesn't have much better performance than the original, and it will still weigh 40lbs!
Honestly, if you could measure all of the dimensions and then replicate this muffler out of aluminum or titanium, then you would eliminate the major complaint with this exhaust - how heavy it is.
