Does 97+ engines have different sound from 91-96 engines? I searched for this topic, but couldn't really find one. I was wondering if there is any noticeable difference in sound (more silent in 3.2? higher pitched in 3.0?). The reason is that my old M3 w/ 3.2 engine seemed a bit quieter (especially at lower rpms) than M3 w/ 3.0 engine.

First, you would need to compare two stock cars, preferably side by side. Furthermore, even if they did sound the same, it might be due to differences in the exhaust rather than the engine itself.

From memory, the 3.0 to 3.2 BMW M engine uses a different head and intake chamber, which likely contributes to the sound difference.

In the NSX, the intake chamber for the most part is similar, the only audible differences I think would be caused by the change to the exhaust manifold / header.
