Sorry, it's a mathematical equation. No psychology involved. Basically he uses the number movements so that you absolutely, mathematically cannot land on a particular spot. He then removes that spot and uses another set number of movements to mathematically eliminate you from another spot. Which he then removes again. He keeps doing it until you are left with one spot.To check/test this, replay it knowing which piece he is "going" to remove and try to land on that spot. You won't be able to in the number of movements he gives you.
