I was wondering if anyone took or has taken any kinda of these classes. I am getting my permit next week (my 6 hours is this weekend, 3 hours in one day) and I would like to improve my skills so I A. can drive in situations that I know more about. and B. lower my insureance so it doesnt kill my parents (I have a 20% deduction, but I would like to have more). If anyone has any info on it, PLEASE chime in. Becasue I know, you all would like your younger drivers to be better drivers. Thanks in advance.

There's more than Skip Barber, but I can't remember any right now. Call up the nearest track and your insurance company and see if there's any. I'm sure an insurance company would love hearing the question, "I want to be a better driver, are there any defensive driving schools that you know of so I can be a more competant driver?" Also check out the New Jersey DMV site and look- a brief search showed there's some classes to reduce insurance rates.

If you can't find any, I'd recommend trying out an autocross. It helps you realize what it feels like to have a car on the edge of traction/brink of losing it (and people often do) in a relatively safe environment at realistic driving speeds (10-60 mph).

I like the autoX idea. However I dont think my parents would like the idea of me taking either the 528i, the MDX, or even the PREVIA out for a spin on something like that. But I really want to become a better driver, even though I have yet to driven on the road (I have but it was only up my street in a '05 V6 Mustang) I still want to become better at it.
