Dash Removal on '96

Can anyone update how to remove the front center console on a '96? After a search in forums and FAQ, I couldn't find a method for my year. Differences: once the vents are removed, there are two screws just above the stereo that need to come out. Also, the SOS directions say to remove a metal piece in the center storage box... mine just has a solid felt lined area, can't figure out if the box is removable.

So:

I removed the clock and the 2 screws behind it

I removed the vents, with a little upward pressure on the bottom of the vent about 1" in on each side, and removed 2 screws hiding behind the vent.

I removed the 2 screws behind the ash tray. (Shifter knob too)

Now I'm stuck... anyone out there got some tips?

The reason I'm trying to do this is because me cigarette lighter is out and I'm trying to check the relay behind it (it's not the fuses). Thanks for the help.

I haven't done it in a while but I believe the bottom felt liner of the box (console) comes out and there are screws underneath. You remove those and the box comes out. That should reveal to screws at the back of the center console, it then should just pop out.

Found it... guess it was a little too dark last night and couldn't see the notch in the glovebox. Turns out the cig lighter was just unplugged!

--anyone know what the little vent is in front of the e-brake? it was also unplugged and it makes a little fan noise??

All this info is in the online manual... You should have just emailed me as I have commented to you before that I just removed everything from my interior... I still have the console out.... The aspirator fan will sometimes make a good amount of noise if it gets a lot of gunk in the fan etc... Once again, once you have the console out--take the aspirator fan to Mark--he can clean it. If it continues to make noise you can always replace it before putting everthing back together...

sorry jrehner... i can be a bit forgetful! :( I'll try to take a look at that little sucker. and i just found the online manual on the blazen site. thanks!!

Easier said than done - it is a relatively expensive commodity! (> $300 list!)

are the threads you really want to reference to service it.

Well, it is easy when the console's out, it just costs a little money. It's best to see if cleaning will help it first or even repairing it. So unless he doesn't want the part to function, it's try cleaning, possible repair, possible used part as seen on nsxprime or replacement... But's it's all easy with the console out--LOL

It wasn't so much the "ease" I was referring to as the cost of replacing - the cleaning followed by adjustment procedure with the set screw/lock works well & is free. The cleaning is less the source of the noise as opposed to the fan impeller being loose in the bearings.

Mine doesn't make noise and I found that dissassembling the console was rather easy and I didn't use a credit card. I have very thin brass straps which I used. Much thinner than a credit card. I think I would have Mark Basch do the adjustment which would likely end up costing the 300 anyway--just kidding Mark. It wouldn't cost 300 if the discount for an NSX club member is subtracted. Time is money. If I were working currently, I never would have bothered to remove the entire interior myself...I may never put the console back together if I don't figure out what to do with the stereo. The newer cars have a head unit with a CD instead of the cassette right?

Hmmm.. what function does the aspirator fan serve anyway? if I can't fix it myself (I don't think taking out the dash is that hard at all) should I even bother anyway?

just curious...

thanks guys! I love learning about the car, and I admit, I am a little lazy about forum searches.... sorry!!

Wrong.
The head unit is identical for all model years.

The aspirator fan samples the interior air by flowing it over an integral temp sensor - this makes it a critical part of the closed loop A/C temperature control system. Being noisy probably does not affect its function in that respect, but it sure is annoying!

It's the console you took out, not the dash. You would have a long way to go to remove the dash. As indicated in post above, the fan is part of the interior temperature setup. You can remove the fan from the console by removing the two bolts. Let Mark take a look at it unless you have time on your hands--does it make a lot of noise when you connected it back up?

just a light whirrrrrrrrrr sound... can't even hear it when the top is off or the radio is up, but idling and when the engine is off and accassories are on, yes...

i'll take the console :) out again and see what i can do!
