Dash removal--lowering steering column

The manual just indicates to go to Section 17 and shows a pic with the column holder bolts removed and the flange nuts removed. BUT in Sec 17 this is #10 on the removal list. I have the column lower face and SRS harness disconnected but want to know if I have to remove the upper & lower covers, dsconnect the TCS sensor/combo switch assembly and remove the steering joint cover/bolts also. I wouldn't think I have to go thru all that just to get the instrument panel and gauge cluster out.. I have all the non steering items out or unloosened to take out quickly. After the dash, I still have to take out the defrost panel as it has cracks at the center bolt...

With the column lower face off, I can see the column holder bolts and flanges--can I just remove them or loosen them to drop the steering column a bit? The DIY mentions the dash but in each case just shows the console removal and a search just brings up console removal also... Also checked SOS DIY this time with no luck....

Hugh just gave me a search thread "cluster removal" which indicates one can cheat at getting out the instrument panel/gauge cluster by telescoping out the steering wheel to the max and holding down on the tilt. IN this position can the dash also be removed or do I still have to lower the steering column per above?

Thanks zennsx--I can unbolt the steering column but I don't think it would be easy to get it back up again and so I have made appt with Mark B on Wednesday to lower the column and pull the dash (I have basically done everything else). I will then pull the defrost panel which only has about 6 screws holding it in and will have that repaired by a another mobile vendor.. Will then have Mark put new dash in and raise the column and I will then go home and spend hours putting in the redyed headliner and the tan carpet etal and reinstalling all the components to the dash except the console components as I likely will change out the OEM head and put in SOS console and trim kit.....
