Dash Covers??

I checked the FAQ and Pep Boys does not carry dash covers anymore nor does DashKing exist anymore. I went with Autozone's "Coverking" brand and ordered for a 2002 NSX (no 2003). It only costs $39 so I was stoked. It arrived today and I was disappointed. It material is very thin and you have to velcro it to the leather which I've heard is a NO NO.

So...

Does anyone have a better alternative?

They only have poly carpet or velour. Both were flimsy/feather weight and use velcro.

Alternative for what? In other words, what are you trying to accomplish by covering the dash, other than hiding its good looks?

The dash seems to wear well as evidenced from examining pictures of vehicle interiors from otherwise trashed cars (including those that were totalled and left to bake in the sun). The grey console shell, along with the covers for the window switches... now those are another story.

I've owned two Esprits and dash covers have been one of the best investments. My dash in my Esprit will begin to shrink after a few years if temps get too hot. Here in Fresno CA the temp has been around 105F.

Driving on the freeway at a 105F, the dash leather gets extremely hot.

Should I worry about this?

Thanks,

EG

I've seen a couple early NSXs with bubbling in the trim pieces (around window and mirror switches and center console). I've seen many more that show not even a hint of such wear.

(Stating the obvious...) I think covered parking during the day or using one of those solar windshield reflectors would keep your dash looking good for many years.

BTW: The NSX dash is vinyl and probably holds up better than leather.

For keeping the car cooler, yes. (A car cover also works.)

But even without these measures, the main part of the NSX dash does not have a tendency to shrink. Except for the thin strip at the very front and center, which can crack, but is hardly noticeable. But this can happen just with age on a car that is kept indoors almost all the time. (Ask me how I know this.)

This is good to hear since the dash cover I purchased is so freak'n ugly!

Thanks guys,

Maybe you could just set it on the dash when you are parked. Then you don't have to use the velcro. Just a thought. But if it's that "freak'n ugly" you might want to just toss it.

Why not have a custom piece of vinyl (or whatever you prefer) cut to fit your dash? You might put some heat reflective material underneath. Keep it rolled up behind the seats, and throw it on the dash when it's going to be left in the sun for some time.

I agree with others that the NSX dash seems to hold up well over time, but if you wanted to protect it a custom cover would look better than what you've described.
