CV boot leaking…

While changing the oil last night I noticed that the RH CV boot was leaking (I had to temporally repair both sides about a month ago after damaging them while installing the Eibach Springs).

· I just wanted to check to see if I should do the repairs or let the dealer deal with it?
· What have you guys seen RECENLTY in labor / parts cost on this type of repair?
· Should I have both of the CV boots done at the same time and should I do anything else to the car while it is down for this type of repair, the car is a 93’ with 101000 miles)?
· Has anyone every taken parts to an Acura dealer and asked for them to use the parts you bring them or will Acura dealers not go for that? (I know some dealers will not offer a warranty on the parts since you did not buy them from them).

I will also have the car aligned while it is in the shop since I have not done so since lowering it and installing the 17”/18” wheels.

I would like to get my parts from Acura of Augusta since they take care of us. I am located in MD near the BWI airport so I am considering taken the car to one of the following dealers; Criswell Acura, Annapolis, Tischer Acura, Laurel or Rosenthal Acura, Baltimore.

I just dropped my car off at Acura of Brookfield this morning to have the left rear outer CV boot replaced. I would let the dealer do this one. To replace the CV boot, the axle and hub need to be removed. I had the right side done last year. When they did the right side, they damaged the hub removing it (because it was siezed)and replaced the part at no cost to me. I think this was a rather expensive part which I would have had to pay for had I tried to do it and damaged it myself.

The parts are cheap. for a $30 part, I wouldn't risk pissing off the dealer. I have brought in parts for a timing belt change and they didn't have any problem. I would look like a real loser if I tried to jew them down $5 by bringing in my own parts for this one. The labor for the other side last year was $144. I'm hoping its the same this time.

Thank you for the response it is greatly appreciated. Let me know what they hit you for on the other side.

Thank you,

Mark, you also look like a real loser when you use ethnic slurs like that one. Nice...

I just got off the phone with Criswell Acura, Annapolis and they quoted me $400 for labor only... I asked them how many hours were they hitting me for, he said 5. I said sir please remove the crack pipe from your mouth.

This is a job to have done by a dealer or a good shop. I think the CV boot comes as a kit with the grease and everything needed to do the job including the axle nut (I think). Make sure the dealer puts on the new axle nut and torques it to spec (around 270 lb-ft). Also have them replace the oil seals that go into the cluch/diff housing if the axels will be coming out (I think the left one comes out) or stressed for any reason. I think there’s a TSB about NOT pulling apart the ball joints when removing the CV joint but I can’t find the TSB—don’t let them try to pull the ball joints as they will pull out of the arms $$.

Thought of it as more of a verb than an ethnic slur. Sorry if I offended you. I didn't think car people were so sensitive.

The dealer just called and it was $190 for labor (up from $144 last year) and $33 for the parts. I believe the boot kit does come with a new nut.

I pray I can find a dealer that will do it for those kind of prices.

Tischer Acura of Laurel, MD just told me that they would have to replace the axle assembly at $1200 (part only)… LOL
I asked if they could do a little more research and get back in touch with me when they have the right quote for labor and parts. I gave them this part # 42017-SL0-000 and said it looks to be about 2 hours for labor.

Does anyone know of an Acura Dealer in my area that does not have their head up their ass?

Well, you're 135 miles from the top NSX tech on the East Coast, Bernie at Davis Acura in Langhorne, PA. Maybe a member in the Balto-DC area can suggest someone closer...?

That may be worth the trip for the peace of mind that I am not going to get screwed. Do you have their contact info. handy?

Thanks for the advice I have an appointment to take my NSX to Davis Acura on the 30th. For $400 they are going to replace both inner and outer CV boots on the RH side and an alignment.

Well worth the trip for the peace of mind that Bernie is experienced.

I bought the replacement CV-Boots from Acura Carland online for $20 each. Then took them to my mechanic and it cost about $250 for the labor. I replaced all 4 boots even though only one was damaged. I figured it was good insurance (10 year old boots...).

By the way, the CAUSE of the CV-Boot failure was that I had the rear sway bar set on the softest setting which pushed the end link close to the boot. Then, under hard cornering, the end link punctured the CV Boot.

Hey, another local. I have mine in for 60k & 90k service (just bought a '91) and axle replacements at a place in Woodbine (rt70/rt97). He came well recommended for working on NSXs and does a lot of Honda/Acura race cars.

The only problem is he's busy with the end of race season and will not rush a car out the door, so turn around isn't like a dealer.

If you call tell him Todd Pearsall sent you.

Thanks for the information. I am having the one shop that works on most of our cars do the work (API in Elkridge). They are going to replace all four of them for me and align it for $350. I am having Joe form Acura of Augusta send me the boot kits. I will definitely check into that shop. I like to have extra resources.
