I'd like to cut a hole in the engine compartment cover on my car. What is it made of and what would be a good tool to make for smooth, even cutting. Would a dremel w a cutting wheel do the job?

Hi Doc,

I recommend using ja igsaw. I have done about 4 of these for myself and other members and it's a snap b/c you have the base of the jigsaw to lay flat on the surface of the cover. It makes tracing over your pattern that much easier. On the underside once you've pulled off the insulating baffle, you'll see kinda like a honeycomb of fiberglass, you can use the dremal to shave these off in order for the mesh to lie flat & flush. If you cut the mesh so that it's just a little bit larger than the opening, it will make it much easier to adhere the mesh and less of the honeycomb to cut out. Instead of cutting out all the honeycomb, just cut the mesh as need to slip around it. You'll see what I mean once you get under there. Another tip, cutting the fiberglass will leave you w/ a "raw" edge around the opening. I used door edge trim molding from Pep Boys that snaps onto the edge to finish it off. I left the felt surface as is and it looks pretty factory. Although you can spend more time & remove the felt & smoothen out the surface for painting, then it would like a type-r cover. Hope this helps.
