Custom exhaust for track use?

I just got an exhaust for my car, but am looking to get a custom exhaust for track days / local events where I want something a little louder.
There is a custom exhaust place down the road that said they could do a 3" coming off both the headers and exiting straight out for $80!

Is there anything that this would hurt? Not enough back pressure? Causing CEL light to turn out?

I know it would be crazy loud, but would only be on for "special occasions" and track use only! And hard to pass up at $80 :)

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Hmm. My reaction would be best described as conservative skepticism.

For one... $80 is a little too cheap. Probably steel stock MIG welded. Even with "friendly discount pricing" Good SS stock/ quality TIG custom exhaust work is going to run more. I've had several made over the years. I paid $300 on the last go around at a friend's shop. If in doubt, take a look at other welding/fab work he has done before pulling in. Exhaust shops are a dime a dozen.. but there is a wide gap between a good welder/fab guy and a bad one.

I assume you are NA, so no. I've always had good results. You can have them weld the 02 bung in such a way as to mitigate the sensor reading. I've never had a problem, in the 2K I might trip it here or there while cold at doddle; but with a master battery cut-off switch it isn't a big deal.

You get used to it. The only significant issue is that with a straight pipe out the back, you'll more than likely be over the sound limit at most tracks for club days. My experience is a meat ball flag in the 108-109db range in such trim with the NSX. Check with your club. I always come off by 6pm.

Honestly, my advice is .. good in small doses... over the long haul it is a little much. It really depends on your tolerance and how you are using/enjoying your car. Day to day it's really not so bad in the 2K, but in the NSX you really need a *minimal* muffler and/or turn down tip to at least help smooth things out... it is a little raw. Otherwise by 4K RPM you won't be able to hear your radio even at max volume, and particularly with shorter gears by 6th at doddle it's a little obnoxious I suppose- especially without an interior on a long trip. Fine for me, I don't know most would like it.

My advice, for the ultimate flexibility you can have them use exhaust clamps so you can swap back and forth between a straight section and the canister of your choice. Work on maintainability a little... With the way I setup my hardware I can just drop my diffuser and in 1a few minutes, and can have things swapped around.

Im selling a comptech exhaust. The muffler has been removed and there is straight pipes in place of it. Still uses the beautiful comptech tips. PM me if your interested.

Thanks for the info John! That was really helpful! I am going back this week sometime to take a look at his work and have him put my car up on the lift and see what he can do. If he can really do it for $80, I will get him to make it and see how it sounds.

Finally had the custom exhaust made :) He ended up charging more than $80! But, for the amazing sound, it is well worth it!

2.25" straight off the headers with no mufflers, cats, or any kind of resonator. 3" tips.
It's a little on the loud side I must say :) Sounds amazing in VTEC though!

Just thought I would post a few pics.

I don't know how long I will leave it on, but for the price, I could not pass it up
I plan on taking it off, sanding the welds a little cleaner, and having it powder coated black with high temp. powder coat.

Looks nice! Now take your cats to him and have him fab me up some test pipes!!!

No seriously, I want test pipes, but I don't want to dish out $200+ Can he make test pipes???

I bet he can. What size do you want? 2.25"? 3"? Let me know and I'll check with him.

Saaaweeet! I dunno, I guess 2.25! If he can fab up something, that would be awesome! I can't find anyone local to do it. PM me with details. I really appreciate that!

That is a light weight exhaust!!!

Get some dyno numbers, wonder what it does?

Yea, it is super light weight :)
I plan on it soon. Butt dyno says major torque gains  But, maybe the roaring sound is fooling me :)

BTW, I can throw out a flame every now and then :D lol

Nice exhaust...........NO........ah....NICE pipes

BTW: somebody makes a 2 into 1 race pipe buy I think it's ~600 bucks so you got that beat

You could have him make a 2 to 1 made in SS with a nice tip and sell them to all the people that want to wake the neighbor's

I would be willing to talk to the guy to see if he would build some for others if they are interested. He ended up charging me more than I thought, but it is well worth it! Sound at WOT is amazing! But, surprisingly, the sound level is very controllable.

If anyone is interested, PM me and I will shoot you a price. He can do 2.25", 2.5", or 3". He even had some 4" if anyone is crazy and wants to do deaf ;) j/k

If you want SS or titanium tips you might be better off finding them somewhere else, though. He wanted to charge me $70 for each tip. Thats why I went with just the 3" tips :) Thats why I was going to Powder Coat it. But, after looking at it, it looks rather nice with a smaller (3") tip. I think I am going to leave it unpainted :)

Nice!.... My buddy here in Texas who works on my MKIV (Supra) and is also known around the Supra community for his work, can weld just about anything you throw at him. I'm going to have him built me a custom exhaust as soon as I get the Taitec diffuser.... Heck, I might just let him weld one up quick to see how it sounds!

Note:There will not be much of an increase in RWHP or TQ with this unit than a aftermarket one. It all depends on the "MODS" and how much of the back pressure you want out of your exhaust to create that smooth throttle response..... Bigger is not always better.
