I just got an exhaust for my car, but am looking to get a custom exhaust for track days / local events where I want something a little louder.
There is a custom exhaust place down the road that said they could do a 3" coming off both the headers and exiting straight out for $80!
Hmm. My reaction would be best described as conservative skepticism.
For one... $80 is a little too cheap. Probably steel stock MIG welded. Even with "friendly discount pricing" Good SS stock/ quality TIG custom exhaust work is going to run more. I've had several made over the years. I paid $300 on the last go around at a friend's shop. If in doubt, take a look at other welding/fab work he has done before pulling in. Exhaust shops are a dime a dozen.. but there is a wide gap between a good welder/fab guy and a bad one.
Is there anything that this would hurt? Not enough back pressure? Causing CEL light to turn out?
I assume you are NA, so no. I've always had good results. You can have them weld the 02 bung in such a way as to mitigate the sensor reading. I've never had a problem, in the 2K I might trip it here or there while cold at doddle; but with a master battery cut-off switch it isn't a big deal.
I know it would be crazy loud, but would only be on for "special occasions" and track use only! And hard to pass up at $80
You get used to it. The only significant issue is that with a straight pipe out the back, you'll more than likely be over the sound limit at most tracks for club days. My experience is a meat ball flag in the 108-109db range in such trim with the NSX. Check with your club. I always come off by 6pm.
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
Honestly, my advice is .. good in small doses... over the long haul it is a little much. It really depends on your tolerance and how you are using/enjoying your car. Day to day it's really not so bad in the 2K, but in the NSX you really need a *minimal* muffler and/or turn down tip to at least help smooth things out... it is a little raw. Otherwise by 4K RPM you won't be able to hear your radio even at max volume, and particularly with shorter gears by 6th at doddle it's a little obnoxious I suppose- especially without an interior on a long trip. Fine for me, I don't know most would like it.
My advice, for the ultimate flexibility you can have them use exhaust clamps so you can swap back and forth between a straight section and the canister of your choice. Work on maintainability a little... With the way I setup my hardware I can just drop my diffuser and in 1a few minutes, and can have things swapped around.
