What is the current thought about the use of a harness with a harness bar (such as SOS') in an NSX without a rollcage?

I researched this awhile back and came to the conclusion that yes, in a very particular situation the use of a harness without a cage may result in a more serious than otherwise injury, but that in basically 99% of potential incidents, the harness was the safer route.

What's your understanding? The Ontario Solo I rules pretty clearly prohibit the use of a 5-pt belt without rollover protection. But Im not racing, just lots of HPDEs.

Years ago Andrie went through this discussion and had some very insightful and persuasive pros and cons. Ted picked up the issue a few years later and has spent numerous hours researching the same for his racing class/rules. I did the same a few months ago mostly figuring out where the belts ought to go on a bar.

Conclusions:

1) For HPDE you are safer with a harness bar and 5 or 6 point (not 4) than the OEM 3 point.

3) A head/neck device with a 5/6 point is highly advisable - though many diehard HPDE drivers are slowly transitioning to this - mostly due to the high cost.

2) On an NSX-T, the roll cage is definitely a plus assuming you still have head room after the install. Very few companies offer roll cages.

Thanks Hrant - I have pulled up that old thread, but I wanted to check in again as this issue is one of constant evolution.

I hadnt thought about 2, I guess I can look into it, but I wanted mostly to check in on 1 to make sure that I was correct with that assumption. It would be great if SOS made some type of supplemental system that attached to the harness bar to offer *additional* rollover protection. I understand that they couldnt market it as sufficient protection in a rollover, but anything *in addition to what is there*, would be beneficial.

I think the one thing that most everyone agrees on is that a full roll cage is NOT safe if you drive your car around the street (especially if you use the 3 point on the street) without a helmet. The bars are just too close to your head and no amount of padding can really protect you in the event of an accident. Roll cages are for track cars with harnesses and helmets.
