Is this like a trickle charger?

It's sort of like a trickle charger but it actually has smarts in the charger with a microprocessor that actually monitors the battery's needs. It uses a pulse technology versus a trickle and uses a combination of current and voltage to maintain and restore the battery. Yes, they work with Optima batteries. On the link above, it's listed on their feature:
