Cruise Control Master Light Stays ON

Hello all...just took into posession a 02. Will do a proper introduction in the new owner's section, but for now i have a question:

Owner only had one key. Took the car and key to the dealership and they were able to imprint the transponder on a T5 key. Tried it on the car, started right up, but jammed a little while getting the key out. The technician refined the key again, and this time it went in and out smooth. However, I noticed the master cruise control display ("cruise control") on the dash was illuminated. I tried pushing the cruise control lever on the side...depresses in and out with the green light turning on and off, but the dash light still remains. I have not tried to engage the cruise control yet.

any thoughts? would this have been caused by the spare key? I did not notice the cruise control display on before while driving to the dealership...however, this was literally my first time driving the car and i could not get the silly smile off my face.

I'm basing all of this on the '95-'96 ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual), pages 34 to 34-4.

The light on the gauge assembly is controlled by an input from the ECM (Engine Control Module), which grounds the BLU/BLK lead from C437 pin 22 to C484 Pin 11 to turn on the light.

So, the most probable causes are
a) a short to ground on the BLU/BLK lead
b) defective input to the ECM
c) a defective ECM

The LT GRN lead to pin C484, pin 6 on the ECM has battery voltage (approx 12V) on it when the Cruise Control Main switch is turned on. But a short to 12V on that lead should also turn on the "ON" indicator on the Cruise Control Main Switch itself.

I don't think this is from the new key. There is 12V to the Cruise Control Main Switch only when the key is on. So, if there's no 12V, the Cruise Control won't work at all. If there is 12V, you should be able to turn the cruise control on and off.

There is a Cruise Control Dimming circuit that's part of the Gauge Assembly board, but that can only dim the bulb (reduce the power to it), not provide the ground to turn the bulb on.

Do you have the Shop Manual and ETM for your car? I suspect the 2002 is the same as the 1996 electrically, except for things like 5 vs 6 speed, anti-lock brake system, and fixed vs retracting headlights.

If anyone has an '02 ETM, they may be able to verify that its the same circuit.

Frank,

Thanks for chiming in.
Before I read your post I was outside disconnecting the battery to see if it would "clear" anything up.
Now heres the weird part: disconnected the battery, and the words "Cruise Control" still remain on the dash (to the left of Premium Unleaded only. If this is a stupid question please forgive me, but arent the words supposed to disappear after you disconnect the battery? I have gotten it disconnected for only 5minutes now, maybe residual current? Is it permanently burned in now?

Thoughts?
TIA

Geez...after searching some posts here, it looks like the words "cruise control" are permanently displayed..? Is that correct? Is it backlit when the cruise control is activated?

Please tell me I am not the biggest idiot out there.

On my '96, in the location you described, the words "Cruise Control" are in black letters on clear green material that is back-lit when the cruise control is on. I can barely see the letters at night in my garage with a flashlight, but they are more visible in sunlight.

Try going for a ride and engage the cruise control at speeds above 30 MPH. If the back lighting comes on then, you have your first embarassment on Prime.

Enjoy the car, experiment with all the controls. It took me 5 years to find the larger compartment in the center console - hidden below the two small upper compartments. There is a list somewhere on Prime of things people inadvertently discovered about their NSX. Its not all obvious and its not all in the Owners Manual.

It is possible that someone may have had the dash apart and lost the filter for the "Cruise Control" when they put it back together. I don't have my car handy to take a look.....sorry.

Find another NSX owner close by and compare "Dashs". Where do you live?
Brad
