Cracked flywheel

A dealership told me the flywheel on my 98 has become cracked (after ~42K miles) and can't be resurfaced. My clutch has always performed fine...they discovered the cracking during some concurrent engine work. Has anyone else experienced a flywheel failing beyond repair like this? Is this typical for 97+ NSX's (dual-mass flywheels)? I'm used to clutch discs and plates getting worn and even obliterated, but I've never heard of flywheels getting worn beyond repair on a street car.

Does anyone have a good condition (resurface-able) 97+ OEM flywheel they'd like to sell?

Jeff

Jeff,

If I recall correctly you cannot resurface the dual mass flywheel regardless. It is a must replace item, even if it is not cracked.

The single disk 97+ clutch replacement is definately a taxation on the wallet.

Thanks for the scoop. Now I'm looking into alternatives to paying the $2000 the dealer quoted me for a flywheel. I might have found a place that sells OEM flywheels for much less. Then there's always the Comptech Powergrip...an entire kit for the price of a flywheel.

Ken,

Unfortunately, it is not. The 97+ single plate clutch and flywheel will almost make you go get a home equity loan

That sounds about right.. at full MSRP plus a little extra for misc. parts and "shop supplies."

At full MSRP, parts cost for a full clutch set w/ bearings is about:

$2781 6-speed
$1477 5-speed

Hi Lud,

Where are you looking up these prices? I'd like to look up list prices for various engine parts, as I have a bunch of them on hand I'd like to sell (for 10-50% of the list price). Are you reading from an online catalog or a hardcopy of the parts catalog?
