Hello NSX Prime

First post though been monitoring this for a while. Looked at a 91 NSX yesterday in my area with AT. Car seems tight, aftermarket wheels, radio, steering wheel, AC control relocared to glovebox. Still deciding whether I want an AT or manual transmission. Tach works intermittently, same with oil pressure gage. As I was looking over the car, I noted two things that I figured I'd post to learn from you guys

1. Crack down the door jamb at the door post and quarter panel just inside of where the weatherstripping hits
2. Crack in the door skin as it wraps around the frame of the door in the inside of the door

Is this whole area aluminum and this could be tigged or is this a transition point between materials?

Is this a common problem?

Not like this on the passenger side, but of course there is less wear and tear on that side. There is some panel misalignment so maybe something has happenend. Owner claims reasonable clean Carfax, but I have not run it myself

Originally car out of Tennesse sold several years ago due to a divorce.

Thanks

Preston

post the vin?

and pics

Never heard of one cracking before. Either abused or it was in a wreck that was not reported and repaired on the down low. Walk away.

the paint is cracked or does it look like the panel is cracked? perhaps someone used bondo but over the years the bondo cracks under the paint. from the way you described it, seems like a beater.

The quarter panels are bolted on so there will be a gap between the quarter panel and the door jam. We need pictures to give you a proper answer.

Definitely need pics of this, if it really is cracked this is scary...

Like mentioned before, we need pics to give a good answer, but I'd walk away from this one. Sounds abused. AC controls in the glove box?????

Let's see:

Strike 1: automatic. Unless you have a physical condition where you can't drive stick or live on steep hills or lots of traffic--> pass

Strike 2: modded/hacked interior & a/c controls. Who does this? Pass.

Strike 3: electrical problems with gauges--> pass

Strike 4: Paint/body panel/structural problem. Unknown origin, unknown past damage or repairs, unknown quality of previous work if any was done--> pass.

Run Forrest, run!!!

In lieu of pics, as others have stated... walk away

Sounds as if something very wrong happened to this car, there are many other better options out there... be realistic about your price range as well

Absolutely run. IMO you need a budget of $25k realistically to have any hope of getting into a real NSX (and not some disaster that has been glued back together)

If this car is in that range or above, you will absolutely find a car in your budget so keep looking.

If this car is well below that range (as it should be), then I would say that you shouldnt be considering an NSX in this price range (because you will find disasters like this one), unless you have strong confidence in your ability to resurrect it (and want to do that).

Yes, this piece is aluminum, it can develop tears if somebody backs in to the quarter panel, or otherwise pushes on this panel laterally.

It's not common, in fact I have seen it only once, but it's not necessarily catastrophic either; It sounds like somebody bumped into the door at low speed, and it was quickly repaired.

A proper repair would entail replacement of the door and quarter panel.

and I think I have seen pics of the A/C in the glovebox. i think he is a prime member.

does he mean side skirt damage near the door jamb? 'cause thats easily replaceable, seen lots even on Ebay... (as most guys wanna get those side skirts with the holes in them that flare out more for the "brake cooling"... )

Without pictures and being a betting man it sounds like the a weld where the outer panel and the inner structure of the door jamb meet. its all part of the quarter panel of course. Agreeing with scorp965, it seems like that quarter panel got popped or perhaps it wasn't installed properly:confused:

thanks everyone for your responses. I dont have pics since this was a car for sale in the area that i briefly looked at it. Didn't have my phone to take a pic. It seems to have a limited history and since I do mustang restoration, looked at the possibility of resurrection.

First goal was to learn about this car, talk to you guys/girls who know the best about all things NSX. Price below 18K, probably take less, just starting to weigh my options. Not many in Charlotte area, other than some fairly new ones at 50+. All I have seen are not pristine, but not going to pay premium price for non-pristine car. Price range is 25-40K but would like to start on low side to decide if I like the car or...love it like many of you.

Just to provide a few more comments, crack is truly a metal crack, not paint or clear coat, runs about 6-7 inches in the vertical section between the first upset from the rear 1/4 as it steps up into the rear door jamb. Probably would agree that it was from a bump in th rear quarter that stressed this area. Car has been repainted in several areas including the roof to match car.

didn't write the VIN down and he is to text me so I can run report myself

vin will help us.....
