coolant tank

Luckily today while I was driving I noticed a smell in my car that smelled sweet. So I turned around and came home. As it turned out the coolant tank top was off... I mean it came off. The metal copper ring was off with the cap still on it??? Is this normal to happen after age. So should I replace it again with the plastic one or change to a metal one.
Thanks

Interesting, I have only heard of the factory coolant tanks leaking at the seams.

My stock coolant tank on the 91 started to leak at the seams. I replaced it with a polished aluminum tank from Dali Racing. It looks so much better. The stock coolant tank is one of the only truly ugly pieces in the NSX engine bay. (The big white emissions sticker being the other).

i'm about to replace mine.... i hope it fixes the leak (which is a little worse than it was before)....

i don't know wtf it is, because it drips just sitting there..... it's dripping off the trans, so i know it's coming from somewhere up there. i'm going to replace the tank and the small hoses that connect to it. (I HOPE THIS WORKS :frown: )

You should go with the stock one. My aftermarket's pressure cap didn't have an airtight seal so the hoses never pressurized. After the a new stock was installed the hoses pressurized and is running like it should. I believe the aftermarket neck interferes with the tightness.

I happen to think the stock one works the best. If your looking for something different and have the MOD-bug snag a NSX-R black one. I happen to think the stock one doesnt look bad.

Check out the coolant tank at SOS. It has a glass tube that shows the coolant level. If you paint a stock tank, you can't see the level without opening the cap. I've had one since they first came out and am very pleased with it.

I believe there is not such a thing as an NSX-R black tank. The NSX-R has the same coolant tank as any other and has a black rubber cover that is available separately.....

i FINALLY found my damn coolant leak. when i replaced my coolant tank, i found that one of the main hoses is leaking from underneath its clamp.

looks like i'll have to buy a new one; but there is good access, so i'm guessing it won't be a big deal.

Well there you go Kenny, buy the old tank from Syn. Knowing the price of used nsx parts, I'll bet you will save at least $2.50.

hah, i'll give my used one away.... i dont' know if that was leaking too, or not.... but it looks alright, a little discolored with age, but no obvious leaks.

i don't have any desire to ship it out, though; so, if you want it, you'd better either be in birmingham or ATL

I just noticed today that my coolant tank is leaking. :(

Does anyone know offhand the part number for the OEM tank? (SOS's is not available)
Is this a difficult/messy job to DIY? I can't really find any how-to's here on prime... Anything I need to know first?

God i'm so glad i read this thread. My car has been having tiny little puddles of green fluid coming off the bottom of the tranny and i have yet to figure out what it is. I never thought of checking the hoses and the coolant tank!
