i am having problems with the coolant system on my car.my coolant tank is leaking a little bit(my new one is about to arrive).i have taken the coolant tank off twice to try to get it repaired, without great success.after putting the coolant tank back on i have put in one litre of anti freeze and then topped the water up to just a little over the maximum.every time i get in the car i check the level to make sure that the water hasn't all leaked out,but what is happening is the opposite, that the water in the coolant tank is rising.the large hose directly below the coolant tank is expanding to approx 1.5 times its normal size, then when i take the cap of the coolant tank it reduces.the car is not overheating at all and apart from the slight leak under the bottom of the tank,it is not losing water, also when the hose returns to its normal size it is REALLY soft.
my friend thinks it may be a head gasket problem or a sticking thermostat.
does any body have any idea what my problem could be.i am going to order a new hose and thermostat tomorrow to see if it helps.

all help is appreciated

james

Are you putting the coolant in when the car is cold and has been sitting around a bit?

I think you're on the right track with replacing the thermostat and the coolant tank. I would also recommend replacing that particular coolant hose at the same time.

If your car is at least six to eight years old, it would probably be a good idea to replace all the cooling system hoses as good preventive maintenance.
