this subject may be covered in another post, but thought i'd mention that like a lot of folks, i needed to input a *bunch* of family video's (analog) to my g5 for family dvd's. a friend of mine recommended a canopus advc110 - said it was a tad expensive, but provided highest quality output combined with no-brainer ease of use.

boy, was he right. i took it out of the box this morning, plugged the old-school video cam into it, then firewired it to the mac. fired up imovie and ... it just works.

if you're dealing with the same issue - xfering old videos to computer for dvd burn, i heartily recommend this unit... couldn't be better.

Hmm, will check it out, sound interesting. Another way, depends on your digital handycam- which have firewire output and video-in input, you can actually use the handy cam to 'link' your video tape player to your mac... only may work on some digital handycam

yup, works best for digital cams direct to macs... our old tapes are analog so need to run through a converter... it's **very** cool. it's a real treat to watch and edit our old family videos and watch our kids as kids again :)

If you are not concerned about getting it onto the computer or the need to edit the video there are many dvd recorders now on the market with A/V inputs and a firewire port for $100 or less that you can use to digitalize your analog footage. Once converted/burned to DVD there is plenty of shareware online you can use to upload it to your comp that is of coarse if you have a dvd drive.

I do a lot of movies. Converting from analog to DVD. Having tried many products and some not so good you might want to try "Pinnacle Studio 9" It is a hardware & software combo. You can plug in a analog/digital camera or VCR to the "Plug" and upload/convert via USB 2.0 to your computer.

Just my .02 cents.

Yes but do they supply a card or converter with A/V jacks for older model camcorders without a firewire ?

good information, thx. so far, i find using my sony cam -> canopus -> g5/imovies is working very well and much easier/better than i expected. for me, this route seems to be the best choice because i'm also using ouf family's 3k+ photos to intermix w/video for final output to dvd.

amazing how simple it is.

I have a ATI All-in-wonder in my PC and it has

1> TV toner - watch TV while I'm online
2> Tivo like recording - not quite as powerful, but it allow me to stop live TV
3> analog inputs to convert all my Hi-8 and VHS tapes to mpeg files.
4> Pinnacle FX s/w to convert mpeg files to DVD format.
