Conversion to Manual from Automatic

You should try and sell the car and then buy a manual. To upgrade the car you would spend a ton of money and it would be worth less than it was before modifying it. The auto also has 18 less horsepower (252hp vs. 270hp) so you would still end up with a car that wasn't as nice as a stock manual.

This is good advice.

But something tells me hejo is going to comment about that last sentence...

Nah. I think a stick is better for the track if that's what you're going to do. But if you're just going to track the car every now and then I wouldn't worry about it and just keep the auto. Also being a 91 he doesn't have the Sportshift so it's not the same experience.

I agree though.. just sell the car if you want a stick. Also with respect to power... yes 20hp less, add headers, exhaust and airbox and you're back up with more torque on the lower end. Then if you really want more power get the BB, Comptech SC or Larry's turbo. Don't worr about the trany it can handle it. Actually Larry's turbo was originally built and tested on an automatic. BTW the diff in hp only occurs in the top RPMs so unless you're going to put in short gears most likely the gearing is feel about the same once you launch off the line.

BTW if you live in the hills of SF you might not like the stick experience in traffic. Just something else to consider.

This is not true, the Auto car was converted to a 5spd because it could not handle the turbo's power output. It kept going through torque converters.

Mavrik's NSX was the original prototype and it was an automatic. However, I'm not sure what the real cause of going through trannys was- the turbo or Mavrik's driving.
We went on a test drive and he drives his car VERY hard. Scared me a few times and I thought I've seen it all.

I'll bet he goes through that manual tranny in no time just the same.

He has it right. If you can afford it, drive it like you stole it and have fun. Just make sure to have a functioning seat belt for passengers and a little piss rag over the seat cushion.

There are few better to flog and test a setup than Mavrik.
