Console Touch-up

I had the same problem w/ my 91...the paint was bubbling and chipping off on the ash tray and on the arm consoles...my solution was to add a carbon fiber dash kit...looks way better now...

I have been looking into this also. I have an aftermarket "decent" stereo and did not want to shell out $645 for a piece of plastic I would cut up.

I wanted to add the burlwood look. The dash kits are made for stock stereo. I checked out home depot too see if I could get a counter top laminate that would work.... but no sucess. It was too stiff and not bendable. There must be some place you can get a sheet of bendable laminate and lay it over the stock console.

How about taking off the piece that has the peeling finish, and sanding it and painting it black? On the console between the phone controls and the shift diagram, the finish on the console trim is bubbling up and coming off to show the bright silver material that's behind the dark colored finish.

do u think it could be sanded down and totally stripped and refinished?

I refinished my interior by removing, sanding, and painting the console and door panels with an aluminum lacquer. The paint is actually aluminum suspended in lacquer and it virtually matches the color of my car ('91 Sebring Silver). I've had a ton of compliments on it, but it was a HELL of a lot of work.

By alot of work are you refering to ripping it apart or the paint process.

How about some more details on the paint and how you painted it. How many coats pointers etc. I think I will be going this route. Did you do a clear coat?

Everything took time and PATIENCE! The disassembly/assembly process is tricky, and you definitely want to get the paintwork to be meticulous. And yes, clear is definitely needed.
