I wish I had pictures to be sure, but I was on my motorcycle so that wasn't a realistic option. You know when you come up behind a rare/special car at night, it is a bit wider, a bit lower, and usually has a unique exhaust setup. This car had it including the LED style rear tail lights that only the 05/06 model cars have [to my knowledge, this car also had just been bought with dealer plates still on it]. It had similar tail lights to the newer SL but they were distinctly different [same basic shape but no differentiation like stripes], as well as 4 exhaust pipes. Then I noticed it had the 'M' emblem, but I could have sworn it was a coupe, and too small for a M5/M6 but too big for a Z4M. Whatever it was, it certainly got my attention and the 25 year old or so Asian guy driving it was smiling ear to ear as I looked it over at the profile.
After looking at a couple pictures online, I guess it must have been a M6. It seemed MUCH smaller and lower than what a M6 should be, if it is indeed as 'small' as I determined tonight, I'll have to take another look at it.
