I'm looking to upgrade my computer soundsystem for under $125. right now my system consists of the basic audio driver that came with my Dell, a JVC RX-507V (over 10+ years old), some crummy Awia monitors from a shelfsystem, and a Altec Lancing Power Subwoofer, which needs to be controlled manually when you raise the volume. Now I know there are a bunch of audiophiles here if I can remember, so I think I should be good for answers.

Things I want it to do for under $125
1. GOOD BASS! I'm still a teenager so this is an important factor. I play alot of club and rap music, and alot of the songs have crazy bass that needs to be heard.
2. Needs to sound good for a long time. Most speakers and headphones die out on my if I play them quite loudly, and they never last.
3. Sounds good with movies. I do play alot of movies and online under 18 approved videos and having nice quality will count
4. Games will also be played on this computer, so once again quality.

I dont know what would sound better, a 2.1 or a 5.1 for all of the above, but mostly music. This is one of the few upgrades I am going to do to my PC. Since I am taking advace CAD (Microstation) and ArchI (more Microstation) I plan on getting a ncie vid card soon to go with it, but music is more important to me.

So thank you in advance for those who can help me:smile:

Save up for a while and get a pair of studio monitors.

How much do those suckers cost? I might go over, I got about 750ish saved up (no job) so I have the ability to go up.

It varies, do some research. You can get a good pair for listening to music for around 300-400 bucks. But you'll also need a small mixer (nothing fancy), and some decent cables, maybe 20 bucks.

I have been pleased with the Acoustic Authority sub/satellite speaker system purchased for my Mac last year. It has its own volume and bass control, and is plenty loud for working on the computer. Granted, it's no match for a decent component home system, but it sure works well for me, even when working on audio/video projects. It connects with a 1/8th-inch stereo jack, so you could even hook it up to an iPod or portable CD player.

I'm not sure what the model number is, but I've seen the updated version at Office Depot lately for around $100.

I would not spend too much more than that, unless your PC *IS* your home sound system, and will be for a long time. As Billy Joel sang: "...you get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers."

Good luck

Harmon Kardon SoundSticks II. Got them from costco for around $125 and amazon had them for really cheap also. They look amazing, sound amazing, and people walking by my dorm room always stare in awe at the jellyfish like subwoofer on my desk. The bass isn't thunderous though but it does have an 8 inch subwoofer so it should be enough to get you by. Besides, Sound quality > thunderous bass. Go get a pair I'm sure you'll be happy.
