Comptech Exhaust problem -Corrected - Read

I just installed the Comptech muffler on my '01 NSX. Like the sound.

I have the '02 valance and the exhaust does not sit correctly. The right tip fits nicely in the opening and is about flush with the finished openening for the exhaust on the valance. However the left tip looks like it is pointed inward (towards the license plate) a couple of degrees and is also back in the opening about 1/2" compared to the right side. I tried moving the exhaust around and it did not help, ( I was thinking the rubber hangers would find the correct position).

Has anyone else experienced this? What can I do to get both tips centered and the same distance towards the finished edge of the opening on the valance? Do I call Comptech and see what they say? I thought I would ask here first and maybe get an answer.

Thank you all - love the sound by the way.

We've been doing similar job today Michael - had mine off to install some heat reflector/insulation material.
Is one of your hangers bent? (or needs to be bent?) You might try loosening up the bolts to your cats & the cats to the exhaust again, then wiggle everything around & see if you can improve the way it is hanging, then tighten everything back up again. If that doesn't work, you might need to bend one or more of the hangers slightly.

I want to send out a Thank You to Ken (D'Ecosse) for taking the time out of his weekend to drop what he was doing and come by my home and look at the problem I was experiencing with my Comptech exhaust. (Mind you, the garage was probably 100 degrees) We laid there looking and adjusting the exhaust by loosening the catalytic connector bolts, unfortunately to no avail.

What we learned is that this exhaust appears to be either damaged or it was just bent a little to much during manufacturing as his Comptech is 43.25" center to center on the tips and mine is 42.5" center to center. No matter what you do, that missing 3/4" is not going to allow it to sit centered as his does.

I will call Comptech on Monday and see what they can do to correct this problem - probably send me a different muffler.

Anyway - thank you again Ken, I am now prepared to speak with Comptech to explain the problem thanks to your willingness to assist another NSX owner.

Well, I don't know yet- I will have to see what they tell me when I speak with them. For all I know that may be within tolerances or something like that. Once I get it ironed out, I will post the outcome for all to see though.

If you check this pic of mine, you will see it is perfectly centered in the spaces in the '02 valance. Michael's left tip seems to be bent too much - it's not only off center of the car on the left side, it also seems to be at angle too.
3/4" does not sound like much, but that makes a huge difference when you're talking about a 4" exhaust tip in a 6-1/2" opening.

Update -
Just got off the telephone with Nate at Comptech, very nice professional employee. The end result, since I am only about 1.5 hours from them is that on this Friday I am going to take my NSX up to their shop and they are going to correct the problem regardless of what it involves, including installing another exhaust if necessary. Can't beat that. Plus I will likely enjoy seeing all the stuff they have for our cars too.

They offered to ship me another one so I could change it out, but this seems like more fun, I get to drive to El Dorado Hills (near Sacramento) and it does not involve my having to remove, install, box-up and ship the other exhaust - which means I have to borrow a truck since the box is so big....

I will post the ultimate outcome after the work is finished.

Ken, you read my mind. Want to go along? I would like to leave here at about 9:30 to get up there and let them fugure out "what up dog". Let me know. Michael

Re: Comptech Exhaust possible problem -RESOLVED

I can't say enough about the guys at Comptech!

Today, as I pulled into their lot, they were walking out and confirmed the problem as I was getting out of the car to greet them. Pulled my car into their beautiful shop and put it up on their gottahaveit lift and put a fan on it to cool it off.

Jonesey (I might have spelled his name wrong, but think sonar opperator in The Hunt For Red October) removed the old exhaust after recognizing the driver's side tail pipe had somehow been badly bent during manufacturing. He immediately installed a brand new exhaust. It looks perfect. He even took the time to wipe the entire muffler assembly down so it didn't have any fingerprints on it. Nice job!

Then I made the biggest mistake of my life; I walked around and looked at all of the toys they have there. Boy, one could go crazy with a credit card in that place.

I also met Al and Ron (both NSX Prime members) who had each brought their beautiful NSX's to Comptech. I get the feeling they are regulars there looking at their nice cars. They wasted no time in pointing out I needed to lower mine, change the sway bars, and start attending some driver education events. I have to agree with their assessment. My wife and I both want to do some driver's education events and get a chance to put the car on the track.

I saw a nice set of Work Meister wheels on Comptech's supercharged NSX. Love those wheels, 17/18's. Of course I loved the supercharger too, but that is not on my list of modifications yet.

I also saw a new TL that had been set up with suspension and looked terrific. A TSX that is supercharged and their kit is almost readty to be made available, man did it look beautiful, very nice, clean instrallation. I bet that car is going to surpise a few people. Then of course I had to see Jonesey's CL Type S which is fully set up with wheels, brakes, suspension and of course a supercharger and exhaust. Great looking car too. I wonder if I could trade him my CL Type S for his????

I had to get the hell of there before I got in trouble. I came close to asking if they would bolt the Work Meister wheels off of their supercharged NSX onto my car to check them out- had I asked they probably would have done it and I would have had to buy a set! (Think- really bad idea without checking with the wife first, after all, it is her car)

There shop is beautiful, like a surgery center. Everyone I spoke with at Comptech was terrific. They obviousley take customer satisfaction very seriously. Well, they convinced me; I will definitely be back for more.

Thank You COMPTECH - you are the best. :)

Michael, it was nice seeing you at Comptech, and even nicer to see you leave happy, yet drooling too :p

We spent about another hour there brainstorming with Shad. After you left, another NSX arrived for service, and then two of our local guys apparently showed up after we left - I wonder what they were shopping for since they are both trackers too ;)

And for those who have not seen Michael's car, it is pristine! Even his fender wells were clean after he drove it from East Bay :D

HRANT -Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I am really drooling over the Work Meister wheels.....but $770 a wheel including tax (roughly) is a bit steep. Do they ever go on sale? Group buy? Those are just simple, clean, open, attractive wheels.
