If the fluid was gone you likely have air in the system and need to bleed it.But more importantly if you are losing fluid like that, you probably have a leak. It's not uncommon to need to replace the clutch(or brake) master/slave cylinders on a 10+ year old car.[This message has been edited by Lud (edited 03 January 2003).]
