I think my slave moves around 1cm when I was looking at it last.  It doesn't move much.  If  you're not tracking the car, Valvoline (white bottle / blue sticker) was some decent fluid for the price and seemed like the best of the off the shelf stuff at the auto parts store when I was there looking around.  I forget what rating it is, but the minimum dry/wet boiling points were pretty decent.
