I have been driving my 04 NSX quite a bit the last few days and today I notices the clutch pedal feels different. it seems it only engages right near the floor and not all the way through. I looked at the clutch fluid level and it was a bit low so I topped it up and tryed it again and still feels short and right at the floor. any ideas???????

Check for clutch master or slave cylinder leaks. Sounds like you got some air in the system. Sometimes you need to pull the rubber boot back a little to see if there is fluid leaking.

Remember the clutch master and slave don't burn brake fluid, so if you have to ADD fluid it is LEAKING SOMEWHERE.

Remove the drivers floor mat and take a flashlight and look up at where the clutch pedal linkage goes through the firewall to the master cylinder. Don't be surprised if you see brake fluid. If so, pull the carpet back and wipe up the fluid. This is the indication of a failed clutch master cylinder. NOT UNCOMMON!!!!! DON"T DRIVE THE CAR. It could fail at anytime. Nothing like the clutch pedal going to the floor as you come up to a stop light behind a big ass truck with a BIG ASS trailer hitch that's 12 in off the ground.

If no fluid behind the carpet then it is the slave cylinder. This is located on the forward part of the transmission close to the engine. Look for fluid on the bottom of the transmission in the area of the shift cable attachment. I doubt if you get to this step.

Good Luck,
Brad

Interesting thing about this system is it can bleed itself as you keep pumping the system. If the fluid was low and you got some air in the system when you refill it, it may take up to 100 pumps to drive the air bubble out depending on where the air pocket is in the system.

So if you added fluid and pumped it 3-5 times it will not recover that quickly, keep pumping and checking the fluid level to make sure it is NEVER empty.

As mentioned above you do have a leak. Check the boot on the clutch master at the front interior wall where the master is mountedIinside by your clutch pedal), and check under the car for wetness by the trans.

Pretty common issue.

larry,

when you said it bleeds by itself, i assume you have to open the bleeder right??

Nope:)

If you pump a while, and observe the reservoir you will see bubbles of air as it bleeds the air up back through the system:wink: I could take up to 100 pumps by hand, but typically less.

This happened to mine about a month ago. Filled and pumped it up many times like LB said, and pedal was back full. Only problem, I had to keep checking the fluid level and topping up. Turned out, it didn't last more than 400 miles and both master and slave were leaking badly. I was adding fluid every week. Finally, replaced master and slave.

Look for evidence of fluid leakage around the slave cylinder and clutch rubber hose.

I had fluid there, assumed it was the slave, and found out it was the hose after I replaced the slave.

Oh well, it was time to replace it anyhow.

Probably not the master, that usually goes out with the telltale "what the heck are those black spots on my left shoe" syndrome...

Actually 85-90% of the time it is the master. The fluid will never make it to your shoe:), it drools down the front bulkhead under the carpet, never being seem until the pedal goes to the floor and does not return.

the weird thing is Larry showed me where my leak was and i topped it off and i was driving it for a year constantly checking the fluid level and it never went down!!! Now recently i felt the pedal feeling a little soft so i check and the fluid after a few thousand miles finally dropped a little. That is weird.
