Clutch Master Cylinder, Steering wheel hub and Oil Change..

To get my car ready for this weekend's Tax Drive, I took it in for oil change and this is what the tech said...

Your Master Cylinder is leaking therefore needing replacement, the steering wheel has a lot of play in it which needs some sort of HUB or Joint that is missing and will replace that and oil change of course...

Master Cyl Replacement - ~$370.00
Steering Wheel Hub - ~$10.00 + $90.00 Labor
Oil Change - ~$40.00
Total JUST Shy a little over $500.00..Is this a Decent Quote??

Should I get the SLAVE Cylinder done as well?? What do you think this was cost??

Brake master cylinder or Clutch master cylinder? I assume it is the clutch, since you mentioned slave cyl. $370 sounds about right 2-2.5 hrs labor + $135 for the parts.

I'm expecting a call back from my Acura dealer, for a quote on a clutch master cyl replacement tomorrow, so I'll chime in at that time.

I'm tempted to do it myself, depending on how complex the job is since the clutch master cyl itself is ~$161, iirc. I just never have a day off, and don't want to start something I can't finish in the same day.

The master and clutch cylinders are OEM'd by Nissin.

Any good auto parts shop can order them much cheaper....

Always do both cyl. together. See other posts as to why but if you do not the chances are you will be doing the other in the near future when it fails.

He's correct,if it is the clutch master you always change out the slave at the same time.THE GOOD NEWS is the slave access point is outside the tranny so you could do it yourself very easy,the master is a pain in the ass. good luck and BTW Drew gave you some good info also.

I called the dealer yesterday and I asked them the same question about the SLAVE Cylinder...they said that it is perfectly fine and only on "SOME" Honda's you need to change BOTH, but for the NSX, it is not necessary.

He said and I quote... I don't want to sell you anything you don't need, we are not that type of dealershhip

Also the part and labor cost is the same as the MASTER CYLINDER job ~$400.00

I never did get called back by this dealer. I've left them 2 messages, and spoke to a service rep who promised to call me back Thurs w/the quote.

I will first say it is a commedable attitude on the part of the dealer. However I do not agree. First thing is the NSX is no different then any other Honda with a hydraulic clutch.

When the clutch system is pumped the seals in the master and slave move together. So they experience about the same usage. Seals get old and they will loose there "crispness". The slave is also loosing it even though it has appeared first in the master.

Once you restore the crispness with a new master, you will be working the slave harder, and it is worn also. Some time after the slave will fail. I always replace both. I do not want someone to call after I have done a master to tell me the slave failed and now the car has to come back.

I really recommend you thank them for "working" for you, but ask them to change the slave.

There is a thread here on prime from someone who understands the aircraft industry. He commented about seal crispness and it makes total sense.

Same problem with mine, just got a quote from my dealer here in Omaha - $300.
Question, how much of this is labour, and how much is the parts? Do you really save that much to get the Nissan replacement yourself?
In the meantime, don't forget to check your clutch fluid level!
