Recently blew out the clutch dampner, yesterday :frown: ... This is what happened: Was driving and heard noise coming from transmission  . Started to drive off and then clutch dropped to floor  . The sound, it appears, was due to the clutch not being all the way released from the plates. Is there possibly other causes to the dampner blowing? Normal fatigue? Something like an actual clutch problem? I will be changing the clutch dampner out, do some of you remove this part all together?

Reason for clutch damper blowing apart was due to the throw out bearing coming apart.

It seems when the bearing split in half and the fork bottomed out, the remaining pressure from master cylinder, my foot on the pedal, caused a hydrolic shock wave breaking the next weakest link, clutch damper.

Took out the tranny this weekend and installed a new clutch set (Exedy Hyper Single) to replace the dual set-up. Let me say, changing the clutch isn't really that bad on this car. A lot of parts to remove before you get the tranny off but straight forward. I got caught up on the axels for awhile, but alas. Extra time spent to go have the throw out bearing pressed into the pressure plate diaphram fingers. Did that at work. Good to work for a big company that has a machinist shop. Other time was spent laying on the garage floor looking up at the settup to ensure all would go well. Did it all by my self. Two long days, but I took my time and studied every aspect. Went back and forth to the computer a lot. Many printed pages. The next time I could see doing it in under 6hrs.

Wow... the throwout bearing broke? Not too common.

Yeah, this normally happens when drivers ride the clutch too much. I have only had the car two weeks prior to this fix. My guess is one of the two previous owners werer never educated on the proper technique for application of clutching. On most cars I am able to go between 100k-150k miles before clutch change and have never had a bearing problem. I'm sure the increased pressure plate force in this application decreased the delta to failure.

I too am putting in the Exedy Single soon. What are your impressions? I just need to wait for the roads to clear of salt, so I can take my car in for the install.

This clutch grabs very well. When it's on it's on. It took me a few days to get used to it starting from a stop in first gear. It takes a little more finess than the stock clutch starting from first gear. After a few days of wear in it is becoming easier to manage. Was a little scared at first with the quick response as my daily driver, but now I'm really loving it. When you punch it off the line, it takes off right away; goodness, does it!. No hesitation or jerking.
