I have a 2005 Scion and the interior seats are a weird material. They aren't cloth but they also aren't leather. They're that material that seems to absorb spills and when it dries up.. it shows where the spill was in the form of a dark spot. I think the interior is similar to some of the newer Saturn's also.

Does anyone know how to clean these spots up?

thanks a bunch,
x

Xavier, are you getting clumsy with your martinis?

The only way I know of to clean that type of material is with a steam cleaner. After it is clean, you might want to consider a professional application of ScotchGuard.

yeah.. I'm sloppy...

BTW... everything went well at VIR..... I guess I go REAL lucky considering the events that occured when I called ya. Heck i even got faster.. it was awesome..

Most of the time 409 will do it. Test in a small spot first. I spray until it's good and wet and gently blot it up with a clean towel.
Mild soap and water will probably work too. Don't rub too hard to prevent damaging the material.

It almost looks like a "vinyl product" of some sort.
I can recommend Sonus All In 1 cleaner.
Just mix it at 30:1.
This product has to sit on the surface for a few minutes. It is unlike any other cleaner you have used.
When I first tried it I didnt care for it because I sprayed then wiped. it didnt do a damn thing.
Then I re read the directions, ALL-IN-1 is perfectly safe to use at full concentration, but in most cases is best diluted with water at 10:1 (strong) to 40:1 (general light cleaning). See the mixing bottle for proper dilution ratios. To use, spray diluted ALL-IN-1 cleaner on surface. ALL-IN-1 is not a contact cleaner, like most detergents and solvents. You must allow time to penetrate, and then rinse with water (jet of water or damp towel). Heavy soils and stains may require agitation. Do not allow ALL-IN-1 cleaner to dry on surface without rinsing.

I would suggest when you spill anything onto the upholstery, you need to get it out before letting it absorb into the material or drying (use a sponge or wet vac or a towel- whatever you have available at the time). If you let it absorb, you may need several cleanings before the stain will go away since it can reappear after you clean the surface. Whatever products you use, follow their directions.

Here are some simple universal directions:
  • Before using, test on a hidden area of the material to be cleaned for color removal or color change.
  • Simply apply a generous amount on the soiled area and allow a minute for the cleaner to dwell.
  • Agitate with a brush or fingertips and blot with a white cotton towel to absorb.
  • Repeat as necessary.

If you have the time and the space in your garage, here's what you can do if you really want to clean your carpets:

1) You can rent the machines to shampoo and extract but you can probably do a good job by hand
2) You should take the seats out to really clean the interior- there are 4 bolts that hold the seats down, one to hold the belt on and disconnect the connector for the power seats. Once removed, you can really get the carpets clean with the machine or by hand and while you are at it, you can clean and condition the leather seats while they are out and clean up all the other interior parts, dash, back pouch, all the windows and headliner.
