Just bought the movie about the infamous favela (brazilian slums) called Cidade de Deus which translates to City of God. It is a violent movie that is based on a true story about the gang life in a ultra-low income corrupted area outside of Rio. The movie has many plots and shows the dark side of Rio and Brazil in the 70s, 80s, and even possibly today. The main reason that this movie intrigued me was that I actually was about 1km away from City of God last time I was in Rio de Janeiro. The go-kart track I went to was in Barra which is a 20 minute cab ride outside of Rio... City of God was another 5 minutes away. Actually we got lost for a while and were almost at the location when we later looked at our maps. Rio de Janeiro is an amazing city in a amazing country, but the situation of the haves and the have-nots there is very sad, I really wish there was something that can be done to help. It is also an interesting study of the effects of social disparity and heavy drug use within large communities. The destructive power of drugs such as cocaine is clearly evident in their society.
I highly encourage this movie, but it should not be watched by kids due to its severe violence.
The DVD also includes a documentary that is extremely insightfull and shocking as well.
Anyone else seen this movie?
