Anyone out there know how much extra weight is added by chroming a wheel, in general. I asked my chrome guy, but got a vague answer.

I tried to get an idea myself by weighing a set of OEM 15s/16s that I had chromed last year for my 93. The FAQs say the 15s with Yokos should weigh 32 lbs and the 16s should weigh 44 lbs. My 15s chromed now weigh 37 lbs and the 16s chromed weigh 44 1/2 lbs. So it doesn't make sense to me that the bigger rear wheels gained much less than the smaller fronts. Is the FAQ weight for the fronts accurate? I know if a naked wheel is more porous it will take more chrome to finish properly, but I don't think that's the answer here.

Chroming a wheel should not increase the weight by that much. If you have an old junky chrome wheel sitting around run a key on it and see how much Chrome is actually on it. More than likely there is *very* little just on the surface. Not enough to increase weight by more than 1-2% in my opinion.

I checked into this before. The wheels I considered weighed in at a hefty 7 pounds more PER WHEEL. They where 17/18 sizes. The chromers told me that chrome is liquid metal and thats not much for wheels. HA! Passed on getting new wheels....
