Chip, or not necessary?

I did a quick search using "chip" as the criteria but got various results. I am contemplating upgrading headers and exhaust. I currently have a K & N filter as well. Should I include a chip/ecu flash/programmer etc in this process? I would hate to spend the money, and not get the full effect. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

First mod I've done was the Dali Racing chip on my 94. I dynoed the car before and after and the net result was about 5 HP difference throughout the most of the RPM-range with a peak of around 7HP. I've recently done Taitec headers, exhaust and Cantrell AIS but have not dynoed the car with that yet.

It is said that a chip will give more gain with IHE updates installed than without but then again, it is much less expensive or labor-intensive upgrade than IHE. Which was the reason why I did that first. Another thing is of course than reversing the mod is just as easy.

If you are going to do IHE anyway, I would do the chip for sure. It should give you the most out of the IHE upgrades.

MvM,

Thanks for the info. Does the Dali chip/programmer provide a worthwhile result in your opinion for the money (specifically focusing on the dollar/hp value)? I am only beginning my research on the NSX, as I am a new owner; so, as a result I am not well-versed on whether or not "chipping/programming" is even all that popular. Thanks again for the feedback.

Ricky,

I will certainly feel like a dumba$$ if you are being sarcastic, but if not...it's a less expensive/less customized "tune" for the car. The chip/programmer (in most cases, depending on the vehicle) will maximize hp and efficiency of the engine. I'm not, however, aware if this mod is even remotely popular for the NSX. Hope this helps.

OK, I did the chip AFTER I/H/E and the net result was 4hp peak with 6hp increase through the midrange on my '93. I had a custom chip made to suit the modifications.

I don't think the chip is worth it. The OEM chip "learns" anyway through the O2 sensors and the only gains they were able to make because they were able to tune to the higher octane 98+ RON fuel that I use.

At the end of the day, you have 4-6hp more but a lessor margin of safety from the computer...

I won't do it again.
